Just a post to reinforce the messages about MTU, and to provide some key-words for googlers everywhere.
Somewhere between 25th and 30th Jan, my local exchange (Haywards Heath) was "upgraded". I use a Linux laptop as a firewall, with the speedtouch USB modem, so I've got access to perhaps more logging information than some. (this is then connected by ethernet to a wireless (WPA) router which also runs a firewall - not that I'm paranoid or anything). Before the upgrade, the server name in the ADSL negotiation was ESR15.Kingston5 or TCL114 or TCL127 or TCL120 ... you get the picture. The last successful login for this was 25th Jan at 14:09. Then in the early hours of 30th Jan the line was out of action from about 2am to 5am, and finally stabilised at 7am. The server name in these messages is now Crawley-WSS7000-BAS0001 .
At exactly this moment, we started having problems accessing certain websites - Orange, RadioTimes etc., although google/gmail were fine. I then discovered that this was only a problem when running Windows, and that using Linux I could browse the web fine. This led me to this fine site, and following the info on the "MTU and RWIN Tweaks", I'm now back up and running and all seems fine.
I came up with a max MTU of 1492; I hope this info may be useful to others.
Oh, and I asked for my MAC code last Friday so it should be with me tomorrow - my tie-in period is finally up and I can't wait to move - new.net is where I think I'll go.
