Do you not get non-deliverable e-mails returned to you with Orange? I've only been with them a month and I can't find any info about this topic.
I've spent ages on the phone and sending e-mails to the morons Orange employ in India, but I can't make them understand me. Here's what I said - seems clear enough to me:
When I send an e-mail to a non-existent address, the e-mail is not bounced back, i.e. returned to me.
E.g. if I send an e-mail to a non-existent address like nosuch@domainnamehere.me.uk it should be returned to me - but it is not.
I have dealt with at least twenty different ISPs over the past twelve years and every one bounced back undeliverable e-mail.
I want my e-mails to bounce back IF the address to which I sent them is wrong or out of service, so that I know they have failed to arrive.
If I understand the system correctly the receiving ISP needs to identify a non-deliverable item to generate a message back to the sending ISP.
So if Orange (as the sending ISP) don't receive that, then a "not delivered" message isn't generated to you. Are there any specific receiving ISPs from whom you consistently don't get messages ?
No doubt if I'm wrong somebody here will correct.

I've also got a pay as you go Free-Online account, and I have tried sending mail using their smtp server (relay.free-online.net) to the same addresses as the ones I tried mailing with Orange. With Free-Online I got bouncers every time.
Also:
If there is no ISP, e.g. if I send an e-mail to nosuch@domainnamehere.me.uk it should always bounce back with "Unrouteable address" on. This is Orange's responsibility.
I know there are ISPs like Hotmail which blackhole wrongly-addresses e-mails, I wasn't e-mailing any of them to test this.
I've just sent 2 test emails, one to your fictitious "nosuch" address and one to an incorrectly modified, known correct address which should bounce. I'll let you know the results.
It has been a while since I had a bounced email but that may be because the addresses have been correct rather than Orange's failure !!!

Orange phoned me yesterday on my landline (!) about the problem. The Indian girl I spoke to understood straight away what my problem was and said she'd look into it. She later e-mailed me the formal complaints postal address. Not heard back since though and the problem persists.
If I'm e-mailing a client and their domain name is offline, I want to know they haven't got it. Especially if I've sent an invoice.
I sent an email last night and got a "standard" response this morning.
Obviously the Indian education system does not allow students to ask "Why?" or "What if?" :-
I no longer receive undeliverable email messages from you for any emails
sent by me (through Orange SMTP servers) that fail in transmission,
please explain why.

nhyder
Response :
Hello,
We understand your concern.
You will receive the mail delivery failure message only if the message
is not sent or bounced back.
If you have any further queries then please do not hesitate to get in
contact with us again.

I think I'd get a better response from a computer-wise 10 year old !

Just spoke to an Orange user I know - she's having the same problem.
I think the Orange Indians are stonewalling - they know this problem exists but they're denying it. That makes this problem worth a formal complaint IMHO!
Hello Archana,
I understand your concern and of course, that is why I notified you.
I recently sent 3 emails that had incorrect addresses which should have
"bounced back" as you describe it, but I did not receive mail delivery
failure messages for any of them. In fact one email was to a
wanadoo.co.uk email address.
Please investigate and respond with your findings.

So phantom, I think you're correct, but perhaps you're being too kind......they probably don't know what's causing the problem.
