Further to my "Puzzling Download Speeds" missive, & my latest email to Mike Newnham, Orange came back to me to say that they have in fact checked with BT & the 7.61 download speed is in fact that recorded at the exchange & could not be that registered at my house & the best I could hope for was 2.2.
This surprised me as the BTengineer had in fact plugged his laptop into the telephone socket nearest the junction box connecting the outside line to my line & did the speed test in front of me which gave the figure of 7.61.
Can anyone tell me if there is a check that I can carry out to tell whether I have a fault on the line inside the house ?
I don't fancy moving my PC to the socket the BT engineer used as every time I disconnect from Orange, I have to ring them to get reconnected.
By the way, they did promise to get a Technical Supervisor to contact me at a specified time to discuss the problem, but as usual this did not happen.

See the other thread you posted to, sounds like it is a problem with your wiring inside the house but the details I requested in the other thread will help make this clear.
Thanks for getting back so quickly.
I am using a Livebox.
I have a main junction box with Three phone sockets coming from it.
The PC is is connected to this from one of these sockets (which is connected to the box by a cable less than 2m long.)
There is an 10m. extension cable linking this socket to the PC.
There is only one filter on this line located near the Livebox.
My latest check confirms a download of 1.2 & an upload of 0.1.
Orange insist that BT have checked the line again & say that the line is only capable of 2.2. I am beginning to think this may be correct & that the BT engineer was wrong.
I am also coming round to the idea that my problems lie more with BT than Orange.
Thanks,
Keith,
Took your advice & checked the connection box. Found wires connected to 2,3 &5.
Removed the wire, as advised, from connection 3 & then found that I could not get onto the Internet.
Quickly reconnected no. 3 & am back on line.

Sounds as though there is a problem with your wiring.
Just had a thought, what are the colour of the wires that should be attached to connectors 2 & 5 ?
It is possible that the wires have been installed incorrectly.

Wire 2 = orange but no relationship to the Orange that we all know and hate
Wires 2 and 5 enter your property from BT's external circuit but wire 3 is only present within your property, this is why it acts as an antenna particularly if you have extensions in the lounge, kitchen, bedrooms etc

Orange arranged for another BT engineer to visit my house. This time he was more thorough & checked my download speed at the Livebox.
He came up with 7.616.
He then rang his base & found that my B RAZ Profile was capped at 1.5.
( no, I don,t what this is !).
BT are now contacting Orange to tell them what the problem is & the engineer reckons that this figure should be somewhere around 5.
The ball is back in Orange's court.
I am now waiting with bated breath for the next move by Orange.
Thanks for the additinal information.
I am now going to wait until Orange gets back to me & if they still can't fix the problem I will start looking around for a new ISP.
I already have an assurance from one of Mike Newnham's people that if I am still not satisfied after this latest episode, I can cancel my contract without penalty.
In that regard, has anybody any suggestions of a decent reasonably priced ISP ?
How about TalkTalk, there seems to be a mixture of opinions about them ?
Breaking News !!!!!!!!
Have just had another Orange engineer on the phone.
I went through with him what had happened yesterday. He consulted his supervisor which took a while then came back to me & asked me to do a speed test.
Lo & behold my download speed is now 5.5 & Orange are trying to blame "a fault on the line".
I believe that this capping goes back to my previous contract with Orange which was for 1.0 mbps & I assume that that was when I was capped at 1.5 & Orange had forgotten to take it off.
To all those out there who are having problems with Orange I have only one thing to say:-
Sounds more like a problem that was fixed and then it just took time for the IP profile to go up again. The engineer likely did a test using the speedtester login to check the connection fully but your own profile took a bit longer to catch up.
