I've been using my Netgear DG834G router with Orange fine until they upgraded my speed. Oddly, my Internet connection will drop once a week or so...and i have no access, but when I enter the IP address for a site e.g. 216.239.59.147 instead of www.google.co.uk it works! To get it back to normal I usally have to reset the router or go back to Factory settings. What's going on here? I'm using the Orange DNS servers beginning 195, etc. What makes this even stranger is that my friend ALSO with Orange and a Netgear modem is having the exact same problem. Any guidance on this would be much appreciated, thanks.
If resetting the router fixes it every time then it sounds like it's not forwarding the DNS correctly. You could set each PC to specifically use the Orange DNS servers so bypassing the router to a degree.
Or could try using OpenDNS instead and see if that makes any difference.
