Hi there. I have just started a new contract with Orange and I have a fairly slow connection. Can anyone give me some advice please?
My router says it is connected at 8.1Mbps, but when I do a download speed check I get between 1.2 to 1.8 Mbps. I have looked at the MTU and RWIN settings and set it to 1430 and 166800. However, now my connection is slower than ever (my router MTU is set to 1430 too, I presume that is correct). I have tried different settings but it only seems to slow my connection down.
The other details of my connection (from my 3COM router) are:

Stream Type Actual Data Rate
Up Stream: 448 (Kbps.)
Down Stream: 8128 (Kbps.)

Does all of this look correct to you all? Will my connection speed increase with time (I have only been connected for 5 days)
I probably should mention that I was using a Virgin (off cable) broadband connection before Christmas on this line and I was getting upwards of 5Mbps download using a speed tester (obviously depending upon the time of day. So I presume my line is OK and it is an Orange fault???? Is this a fair assumption?
OK, I have done some messing around with the MTU settings and have found that 1478 MTU is by far the best so-far (with an RWIN set to 76214 and 1478 set on my router too).
I am now getting between 4.1 and 5.5 Mbps download and 0.4 Mbps upload. The download is double the best I have achieved so far, but should I be aiming for even better?
Also, the speed I get seems to depend upon my IP address assigned by Orange. If I reset my router, I get a different IP address and sometimes it gives rubbish speed. Another reset will then improve it again. Is this trial and error? Should I just keep resetting and hoping for the best, or be happy with my lot (I am currently stuck at between 4.1 and 4.5 as the 5.5 was on a different IP address).

Well at least some tweaking has improved it, as for your other questions im sure one of the others will advise you as i havn't been an Orange customer for over a year so unable to answer.

One thing you're missing is the IP Profile for your line which can be found by running a test at...
http://speedtester.BT.com/
During the first 10 days of connection the profile can act a little oddly, sometimes not correcting until after that time. Usually though if the profile is low and the sync speed is high enough for another profile level then the system will adapt to it within 3 days.
