First up, there is a solution to the frustration.

I have two laptops. One could connect fine wirelessly to the Livebox, one I needed an ethernet cable to be able to get on the internet. After struggling with that wireless connection to the livebox connection for a couple of months I gave up and went out and bought my own ADSL modem. (just a plain old ADSL G modem).

Result - the internet runs about twice as fast and both of my laptops can connect fine wirelessly.

I have had no problems with the Orange internet itself, I really think the livebox's are just a heap of crap. Give up and get a decent modem.
