Got my livebox yesterday and tried to connect it. Everything went fine (red button flashing as per instruction etc) but when I plugged in the ethernet cable and tried to get the PC to talk to the livebox all I got was the fact that the cable was still unplugged.
Rang Orange, on for 35 mins and they said that because my line hadn't been upgraded yet that the livebox wouldn't work. I am presently on the old 512Mb unlimited moving to 1Mb 2Gb limited download package)
Came home today and conntect using my old copperjet modem and notice that the speed had gone up to 1Mb. Tried to connect using livebox and again nothing. So do Orange have to activate the live or is there something wrong with the livebox/my PC?
The connection between the livebox and PC is completely seperate from the line. You could be living in australia without broadband and plug the livebox into the PC and it should be able to connect.
If you have one try another ethernet cable, or can try yours on another PC if possible then do.
Otherwise try the red port on the livebox, check if it still says unplugged, try the yellow too. If neither work call them and ask for a replacement cable as that will likely be their next step.
Have tried a work laptop and it connects so it must be my computer. I've got an ethernet socket and it says that the computer has 10/100Mbps Ethernet on the front so what's wrong with my PC? Do I need a new ethernet card.

Possibly but there are a couple of things to try first.
Main part would be to update the drivers for it, reinstall if possible as could be just a software problem.

Or can I cannot the livebox via USB???
Well yes but it's unsupported by Orange. If you have a USB A-B cable, commonly used on scanners and printers, one end normal USB the other a squarer connecter, you connect it to the USB socket on the side where the enthernet ports are. As long as the Orange/Wanadoo software is installed, or the CD in the drive then connect the cable and let windows install the "Inventel Gateway" automatically.

or use a USB --> Ethernet Network adapter???
Should work but urgh hate those things personally. Anyway probably cheaper to buy a new ethernet card. There's ones which will do the job for under £3 on ebuyer.com.
Problem solved. Went down to PC World bought an ethernet card for £7.99 and everything now seems OK. Don't know why the old ethernet connection would work but for a 5 minute job it's now sorted. Thanks for everyones help here!
