Hi, hope somebody can help. Since ive been using Orange internet service ive had very few problems. but in the last week ive been plauged with a number of issues.
It began with the connection cutting off. That is now fine but it now connects okay but iam encountering ping spikes when playing online games. webpages are also loading very slow and the alround performance is very poor.
Im sure my connection is 2meg. I ran a line test with these results. Hope somebody can make sense of it. Thanks for reading.
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3584 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 118 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
Notes:
Your line is configured to the maximum rate that it can support or at your chosen fixed rate, this is known as the line rate and would be viewed through your CPE software or in your router configuration.
Your IP profile is always less than the line rate and is normal on any network.
The Actual IP throughput is the average rate that was achieved during this test.
Well that test shows you're on an ADSL Max connection where there's been some problems recently, probably within the last 3 days. Some sort of low sync event(s) happened and that has caused your profile to be reduced, thats why you'll be very limited speedwise at the moment. Normally within 3 days, providing it's stable, the profile should be increased.
It's likely all the problems are stemming from that so it's just a matter of wait and see if it corrects itself shortly.
Just to help me understand these profile pages better, doesn't the downstream rate come down with the profile too, or is this like the attainable rate you see on the livebox?
The downstream rate is the sync rate, that is how fast it's connected to the exchange at at the time, it determines the maximum profile that can be set. It doesn't however mean it can't be lower than the maximum.
Generally it works like this.
You connect and it determines the best profile it can set is say 4 meg for that connection so your broadband happily runs at 4 meg.
Then say there's a minor problem and it ends up resyncing at enough for a 2 meg profile, you then get 2 meg. Could of been because you were plugging in your new Sky box or cordless phone and forgot the filter it needs for example, you realise and fix the problem. The broadband resyncs and goes back to 4 meg. This is due to "blip logic" where it basically ignores one off problems if the sync speed returns to normal straight away. I don't know what length of time it uses before two events are assumed to be related.
Now if a similar thing happened but instead of syncing once at 2 meg it did it twice then it invokes the profile system into action. The line is considered unstable so it reduces the profile in order to prevent disconnections. If later on the problem goes away and the sync returns to 4 meg again the profile stays at 2 meg, it lags behind to make sure the problem has really gone away.
Profile increases take upto 3 days, it used to be a straight 3 days but a change in the summer means that too is dynamic. The larger the jump of the sync speed upwards then the quicker the profile will go up as well. Thats supposed to happen within a couple of hours at the shortest, but if the sync speed rises back slowly then it'll take upto the full 3 days.
Profile levels are as follows although this list misses out a few of the 1/4 meg levels that were introduced in the summer.
Sync rate > Maximum profile
288kbps up to 0.25Mbps
576kbps up to 0.5Mbps
1152kbps up to 1Mbps
1728kbps up to 1.5Mbps
2272kbps up to 2Mbps
2848kbps up to 2.5Mbps
3424kbps up to 3Mbps
4000kbps up to 3.5Mbps
4544kbps up to 4Mbps
5120kbps up to 4.5Mbps
5696kbps up to 5Mbps
6240kbps up to 5.5Mbps
6816kbps up to 6Mbps
7392kbps up to 6.5Mbps
7968kbps up to 7Mbps
8128kbps up to 7.15Mbps
Target margin
Margin is the amount of clear signal above the background noise allowed before the connection is made. This normally targets 6db, which is the usually gives the best speed without disconnections. Sometimes a connection won't run at that level or is more sensitive so will disconnect. Once the system detects this it will increase the target margin hoping to get a clearer signal. It's done in 3db chunks upto a maximum of 15db.
When increased this reduces the sync rate and it can be triggered by a bad connection, thats why you'll often see a low profile of 135kbps along with a margin of around 15db. The system is supposed to re-examine the target margin after 14 days of stable connection.
