Hi,
I'm not sure I'm posting this in the right section but I'm sure you will advise if not. Just recently told that Anytime is closing so agreed to go with their £11.99 package... (was happy with my dial though... sigh). Anyway, they signed me up for the £12.00 which meant I got a wireless router which I didn't want. (They have also messed up my direct debit by taking the old amount out this month... that's another story!!).
I have installed the Siemens box tho I don't think this is a live box is it? Anyway, it's ALWAYS connected which I don't want. I have reinstated the little computer screens on my task bar but not sure how to disconnect from the internet. What I want to do is boot up my computer and NOT go straight onto the internet. Then I want to connect manually and disconnect manually so that I have the control. Can anyone help me please?
What I'm doing now is actually switching off the Siemens box manually by the switch is has on it, then switching it on again when I want to connect to the net. I NEVER leave my computer on when I'm not using it, I always switch it off and switch it off at the plug and I want to do that with the modem box too.
Sorry it's a long post but I need to explain it fully if poss. I would very much appreciate your advice (no... not throwing Orange out yet... hehe) and would thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
I take it this is an internal modem from the way you're describing computers on the task bar?
I think the way to do it is
control panel -> dial up networking
right click "Siemens...." -> properties -> dialing
and un tick the "this is the default internet connection" box
I think what you will find is that something such as a virus checker is trying to dial out to get the latest updates when you start your PC up. Having manual control is a good idea. My gf once clicked on a link in an email as she was convinced it was related to something she requested 5 mins earlier, then spefically told the software firewall to allow a connection from this new piece of software to connect to the internet!! It was only when I was booting up my machine and it was requesting a connection to the internet straight away that alarm bells started to ring as it never used to do that
I've since got a router and told her to not do that again!
Hiya thanks for your reply. No it's not an internal modem it's the new Siemens box that Orange sent me when they forced me to go bband.... after being on Anytime for years!! The box (router) is plugged into the electric and connected to phone and computer... it's the being on all the time I don't like. Have been told you must NEVER switch the router off, leave it on 24/7 but switch the PC off if you like.
What I DON'T LIKE is the computer being connected to the internet all the time even when I'm not using the internet but doing letters etc. I want to be able to disconnect from the net and then connect when I want to.... why do they make things so difficult.... it was never like this before (shucks).
If you're on a rate adaptive service which optimises your speed, then turning it off will fool the system into thinking you're line is unstable and could reduce your download speed. The other thing is once you have a working Orange connection, is to cling on to it, and starting up the router again may bring more problems.
However, if you feel uneasy about leaving it on, then turn it off then
Hiya
Thanks sweeperdog and stevelondon, it's really kind of you to help me out. I really don't want my PC connected to the net when I boot it up so I think I will have to go with your suggestion Steve and that's to disconnect the ethernet cable at the router, then plug it in again when I want to connect to the net. Bluddy Orange, I told them I didn't want the box that had the wireless thingy, I just wanted the one that plugs into the usb port with no electrical connection, but they didn't listen and signed me up for this ruddy one!!!
Can you just tell me about this please? I eventually reinstated the little computer screens on my task bar so that seeing those meant I knew I was connected. However, someone told me that if I right click on the screens there and DISABLE... then it takes my connection off is that correct? If so, how does one then connect again when one wants to go online? If this is an alernative method without much hassle I would go this way. Thank you all for your help, it's really appreciated I can tell you.

If you do it that way when you want to renable it on XP go to
Start > Connect To and choose "Show all Connections"
and in the window that opens you should see your connection called
"Local Area Connection" just right click it and choose "Enable"
On Vista
Click on Network and Sharing Center.
Click on Manage network connections on the left side.
Right click on Local Area Connection and choose enable.
