I have had Orange Broadband for a couple of years, took up the "free" offer of Broadband Plus, which at the time promised 2 meg. Until recently was getting around 1.9Mbps download speeds, but now dropped to around 950. Livebox stats are:
Please note the ADSL attainable keeps changing but shows 2976 more often than not.
According to dslzoneuk.net, ADSL (LLU) is activated on my line (even though it says Orange LLU is not available), I am 2.51 km from the exchange and the line is capable of 4Mbps.
I have been trying to run the BT speedtester to get my IP profile but upon entering my phone number all I ever get is the following message:
The system is currently busy. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider.
I have tried running it at as many different times of day as possible (latest 12.30 am, earliest 7.00 am), but all with the same result.
I am very much learning as I go along with this, but I read a couple of posts about LLU (which I don't really understand). Could this be why it wont work? Is there another way to get my IP profile?
I have also ordered an ADSL XTE-2005 Master Faceplate to see if this improves my connection speed.
Sorry if this is a bit long, and if it is all old hat please can someone point me in the right direction?
You're most likely on an LLU connection. It won't be able to go higher as your sync speed is under 2 meg, it would need to be improved stably a reasonable amount above that to be changed to a 2 meg connection.
As I said, I am learning this as I go along, but based on the various threads I have read on the forums and from information gleaned elsewhere, please could you (or anybody else!) confirm if the general picture is as follows:
1. Orange are moving many exchanges to LLU, apparently including mine
2. This means you get half the speed you used to.
3. BT speedtester does not work if you are on LLU.
4. No matter what you do (like the ADSL Nation faceplate I have just ordered), the connection speed is not going to change, and this is also regardless of what my line can actually achieve.
5. Calling Orange Technical Support is likely to be an exercise in headbutting a brick.
6. Orange doesn't seem to care that they are creating a poorer service for an awful lot of their customers.
7. My only course of action is either to:
a. live with 1 Meg speeds and be thankful I am not paying (directly) a monthly fee
or
b. move to another ISP like PlusNet and get proper broadband.
Thanks for your help, I'm off to have a bath with a toaster

Thanks nhyder for taking the time to respond (very to the point )
With regards to point 2, do I take it that being on LLU shouldn't necessarily mean half speed, and therefore what could I expect to get?
And for point 4 is that No, there is nothing I can do or No, there are steps I can take to improve matters; and if so, any suggestions?
I'm probably being really dense with this, but this site/forum has been extremely helpful in making me considerably more enlightened than I was a week ago.

Point 2 : No, it shouldn't really give anything less. Orange and BT tell me that my line is capable of at least 4.5meg and I see 5.7meg on speed tests. But Orange will offer you very little help to maximise your connection. It was only through hints/tips/tweaks on this site that got me from 2.5meg to 5.7meg.......I was astounded because I didn't believe what Orange were telling me and they couldn't offer me any advice to improve the connection.
Point 4 : No, there are steps you can take as indicated in Point 2 above. It just takes patience and time. As I said, don't expect any real technical advice from Orange. I've never wasted money on phone calls, all my communications are email or letter......I just don't trust their verbal communication.
Use the Search section on this site and you should be able to get an answer to most of your problems.......somebody has been there already and found the solution !!!
There are few new problems now, that's why it's difficult to understand why Orange allow known problems to continue.
