Sadly I signed up with Orange broadband before I found this site.
But is it all bad news????
I set my mother up with Orange well over a year ago now ....
I chose Orange mainly due to the free international calls (we have family in South Africa)
She has not had a problems during this time..... OK - there maybe a few disconnections but very few & far between. The VoIP phone is also very reliable.
After reading this forum I ran several speed tests from her PC - 90% clocked the line rate at over 7000kbps - two tests actually came in at 8100kbps - I didn't think this was possible.
I just hope my line will be as fast & reliable as here, I do doubt this as I live across the other side of town and im not as close to the local exchange.
Could it not be a fact that all ISP's are pretty average with some bad or really bad?
My ADSL is currently with BT - they say my line will support connections up to 5mpbs, yet I hardly ever see speeds over 2mbps.
In my office I have broadband with Demon, this is supposed to support full 8mbps as we are less that 1kn from the exchange. We did get 7-8mbps for a few months and it has gone downhill since. Average is now 2, maybe 3mbps on a good day.

I think you're right. There are a few (in single figures) that are very good.
I had to work hard for nearly 6 months to get from 1.5meg to the 5.7meg I have now.....absolutely no change of service ("up to" 8meg from the start). Some of it was to do with the phone cabling in my house and the internet settings on my laptop....but a lot was and still is to do with Orange.
Now, other than the occasional glitch I have no problems with Orange.
But if I lived in an area of UK that was currently being LLU'd I might have a different opinion.

In my personal experience any ISP is good if you have a stable connection and reasonable speeds then theres no reason for the average person to think about it you just use it as you are getting what you pay for, its when you start experiencing problems and have to use an ISP's CS and TS that you know wether they are good or not ie: know what they are doing and what they are talking about and get the problem fixed ASAP, sadly some ISP's are simply useless in that department and are only interested in keeping you in a contract or reminding you when you want to leave that you can't because your still in that contract.
Just look at DSLZoneUK's ratings and comments most is about lack of CS and TS and their attitude.
And it beggars belief how these (mainly the bigger) companies are still getting away with it.

I'm glad I'm not with karoo - that average score is getting lower all the time
I feel sorry for the people of Hull though who don't seem to have any choice?
I feel the support departments of all the ISP's I have ever been with suck.
I have a little technical knowledge and have been using the t'internet since the early days so i know how to diagnose and fix most user-end related problems.
Trouble with technical support department is they are not technical and read from scripts. If you do not follow their instructions your problem will never be passed on to 2nd or 3rd line support.
All too often you are told to check microfilters, re-boot PC or power down router when you have tried this several times already with no effect.
Anyway - back to Orange - My livebox is due any day and my line goes live on Thursday so i'll be crossing my fingers that all goes well and I don't need to speak with support!
