I have been an Orange Customer for just over a year.
Have a search for my posts to see the amount of research I have done into the problem I had.
Fundementally, I was on the free broadband available with an Orange mobile phone and I was supposed to be on IP Max for speeds up to 8 Meg.
In fact I found out from my own seperate enquiries that I was actually on IP500 giving just 1/2 Meg and capped at this speed.
I knew what the problem was - I had been wrongly provisioned - but each time I spoke to Orange I got a different story. It was unbelievable! Everything from my exchange wasnt enabled for IPMax to my line wasnt in good enough condition to receive more than 1/2 Meg. They even told me that I lived too far from the exchange to get any faster speed. I live about 1/4 mile from it!
I escalated the problem on numerous occasions and then they changed the rate for the phone calls from free with an Orange phone to national rate. Considering the fact that you have to wait half an hour before some brain doner answers it started to cost a lot of money and became too frustrating.
I firmly believe that because I was on the free package there was a policy of not re-provisioning my line.
Anyway. I am now out of contract and have left Orange and am now with Talk Talk. I now receive a connection speed of 6 1/2 Meg.
This proves that the Orange staff are little more than poorly trained monkeys who do not understand the technology and products that they are supposed to be advising on.
Orange are Absolute Rubbish!
The only solution is to ditch them and get a new service Provider.
There is another site called TalkTalk Problems like this one and has been running since Feb 2007. There are only a handfu of posts on it that shows in comparison what a Shower of Brown Stuff Orange truly are.
Glad to hear you're sorted with a nice fast connection Dave.
Time and time again people post on here after leaving Orange and report high speed, stable connections with their new ISP.
This includes myself - I have never looked back after leaving Orange last year and joining Idnet.
My connection has always been fast and stable in over a year.
The apparent 'line faults' that Orange spew out over the phone with other bull to their customers is constantly proven to be nothing more than lies.

Rant Over - Dave
I can't talk from experience, but I think the main problems were having back then were the huge delays transferring from a BT line to their system.
Carphone Warehouse staff must be a buch of liars though, since one member of staff said they were in the top 10 for the last 4 years running.!
If you are in receipt of a broadband service that does not meet the providers promotional hype then you should request a MAC and migrate to another provider. You can do this at any time - in or out of contract. OK yes, on the face of it, Oranges terms and conditions give them a legal advantage over you as in 'you signed the form without reading the small print so you are stuffed' but there is such a thing as an unfair contract and there is a law that protects people here in the UK against that. If Orange promises the earth, doesn't deliver and then tries to enforce the contract against you then they move into this legal arena. Of course they will come on to you in a threatening manner but that is what corporate bullies like Orange always do. If people have the courage to take them on and stick to their guns then most likely Orange will chuck in the towel and even if they don't then you, having done your homework, will walk all over them.
