Hi, My Dad has just upgraded his ancient Wanadoo 2mbps connection to Orange Home Max (I think he's on ADSL Max as according to samknows.com his exchange doesn't yet have LLU). His speed has stayed at around 1.5mbps even though his exchange is only at the end of the road and Orange have confirmed to me over the phone that he should be getting about 6mbps.
I've been through several dead-end phone calls with their customer support already (delete your IE cache - even though I explained he uses Firefox - reset Livebox etc).
I'm leaning towards the possibility that his speed is being capped like so many other people seem to be. The problem is the results he's getting with the BT Speed Tester which should hopefully prove it.
This is the result he's getting:
Quote:
The speed test has completed on test server speedtester1.nat.BT.com for user xxxxxxxxxxx and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of
1298 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.
Your IP address is XX.XX.XX.XX, your browser is reported as being Mozilla 5.0 and is running on Windows XP.
BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:
For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.
You may now disconnect from the speed test account (click 'disconnect' in your internet connection window) and if you wish to regain normal access to the internet please re-connect to your ISP using your usual username and password.
Please note that test results may vary according to varying traffic in the network. If you continue to experience slower throughput when logged in to your ISP, this may be due to a slow internet site or high traffic levels beyond the BT Wholesale Network. Please report this situation to your ISP's helpdesk
Now it's been suggested to me over at thinkbroadband.co.uk that this type of result (I.E. not showing his IP profile) occurs when you change the login details on your router and access the site this way but my old man is definitely not doing this as he doesn't know how to. I can't use this site myself as I'm on LLU and it doesn't work. He's entering his phone number and Orange ADSL login into the website, does anyone know why it's not showing his IP profile?
I think at the moment he's getting so fed up with getting anywhere he's just going to cancel his contract anyway but I'd like to get to the bottom of this first.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Sorry for the long post.
My original, inconclusive, thread at thinkbroadband is here.
Odd, try asking him to run the speedtest through IE and see if there's any difference if the details it gives back.
Also he was using... http://speedtester.BT.com/ and not some other speedtest they provide?
Alternatively you can at least check the line stats in the livebox, won't tell you the IP Profile but it will provide the sync speed and give an idea of what profile he can get currently along with info about the line itself.
Log into 192.168.1.1,
"admin" for username and password,
Go into system information and copy the ADSL section but removing any IP's and his username before posting it.
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 4037 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
4meg speed, a fair bit under the 7meg profile but that could have just been the time of day etc. Doesn't suggest too much out of the ordinary at this stage. You could keep and eye on it and possibly look at tweaking some of the settings. Things like the MTU can have an effect on that.

This test was done after midnight so I'd expect it be faster than that anyway. The point is that he has never got a speed over 1.7mbps from any other speed test. It was explained to me that the BT speedtest bypasses your ISP's backhaul so if you get faster speeds with this it means your ISP is limiting your speed, is that correct?
