Hi everyone. I've been with Orange on their Starter package (max 1Mb) for over a year. Recently I had some bad disconnections so they sent a BT engineer round and he fixed the problem (my noise margin was anout 5.5dB and he got it up to 17.5dB). Being happy with this I upgraded my package to Home Select (up to 8meg with Livebox). By doing this I seem to be stuck with an 18 month contract.
The Livebox came last Thursday and all was well.
However on Friday (16/11/07) I awoke to a flashing @ light. I logged into the Livebox and saw that the noise margin was 1.1dB!
As I'm typing this I have the following figures

Quite a nice jump showing an obvious problem was there before.

That could possibly just be a one off when it was put onto Max, especially if it's always stayed higher since.
My attainable download rate has been as high as 4000kbps and the noise margin has not been higher than 6.4dB.
I also ran a speed test...
Attainable will vary a bit, thats normal, though maybe not that much. The margin targets 6dB so nothing out of the ordinary for those figures. Try running a BT speedtest and see what the IP Profile and downstream rate is at the time.

I have been told by the polite Indians that I should wait 15 days for the line to 'stabalise'. So am I worrying a little too early?
Well you will want to wait out the 10 day training period for the line as things can act up a little during that time.

Here's what I got
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 1000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 2560 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 876 kbps
I should probably run a test outside of peak time.

Many thanks. It's nice to know that there are people like you who can reassure 'newbies' like myself.
That test shows you're currently limited to 1 meg, you should be able to get 2 meg if everything's stable and it should go up within 3 days. However this isn't always the case during the first 10 days, it may remain like that until they're up.

I hope you don't mind me butting in to ask a question.
What exactly do you mean when you say 'it may remain like that until they're up'?
Who are 'they'?
And what is the thing that should be 'up'?
Please forgive my obvious lack of knowledge.
Until you are no longer within the first 10 days on ADSL Max then the IP Profile may not increase, therefore keeping you at 1 meg until after that time. It does that sometimes.

I think the BT engineer said there was about 4.5km of wire between me and the exchange, so I'm quite happy with my new speed.
Thanks again to those who helped me out.
