I had an email on 8 Nov from Orange saying they were making some changes to my connection which could increase my speed and that I would lose my connection for 30 minutes during 7 Nov (previous day?). I received an identical email sent on 9 Nov with the same dates.
I carry out a daily speed test (which goes into the survey) and I have been getting a steady speed of approx 3390 download and 382 upload.
On checking my speed on 13 Nov it appears that my speed had dropped to 1946 download and 243 upload.
Today I received an email from Orange stating “We've finished making the changes we emailed you about and you're now getting up to 7.0 Meg broadband.”

The strange thing is that on my laptop (Vista) using speedtest.net I can get readings for both upload and download speeds, however, on my desktop (XP) which is the PC I normally use for speedtests I can now only get my upload speed and then speedtest.net stops working.
I have 3 questions:
(1) Now that I have been LLU'd will my speed ever increase again?
(2) Does anybody know why being LLU'd should stop my XP Desktop PC being able to obtain an upload speed from speedtest.net?
(3) I have had to upload this message on my Vista laptop as it wouldn’t upload on my Desktop (XP) although I can use the desktop for surfing, sending emails, and other web pages that require uploads so it must be capable of uploading some things. Does anybody know why this is happening since being LLU'd
Your Vista laptop adjusts MTU settings, your XP PC doesn't so read the link on this site "MTU and RWIN settings", you may need totweak your PC.
Your attenuation result is quite high at 53dB so you're a fair distance from the exchange but you can't do anything about that.
But your noise margin has shot up.....22.3dB(I'm on LLU and usually see 11 to 14dB). Try plugging directly into the main BT linebox with nothing else plugged in anywhere not even any extensions (not even a phone).
Same just happened to me, i'm not on chester central exchange but i am on a chester one. I was getting 3mb before now they say they upgraded me to 6 my connection has dropped to 1mb
was intrested to read this, as i received no emails from Orange at all saying anywork was being done, im in chester but not sure on the exchange, but on the 8th November at around 9.30 in the evening i lost all internet access.
On the 9th when i checked my connection what i first thought was no internet coverage has now shown to be "limited" internet coverage, i can google stuff but just cant link to the majority of websites, skype still works fine also.
After a number of calls to the help desk and moving my computer to another location it became clear this was not a issue with my router or computer and finally on the 11th someone at the Orange call centre told me that there was a upgrade being done and they need to arrange a line check that would take 4-5 days.
aside from the fact that if they had mentioned the upgrade on my first call on the 9th that could of saved myself money, time and calls to the call centre, im not holding my breath for a fast solution to this,

You'll need to tweak your MTU and RWIN settings....use the link on this site.
My LLU decreased my downstrams synch rate from > 5000 kbps (typical speed tests were 4500+) down to 2272 (typical speed test 1900)
This 2272 figure seems to be common on LLU service - absolutely disgusting, but Orange say 'this fits in with the "up to 8MB" strapline, so tough luck'

I have discovered that I can obtain an 'upload speed' from Speedtest.net and also post to this forum if I disable my firewall - I did not need to do this before being LLU'd. Has anybody any ideas on how to resolve this. It must hav something to do with being LLU'd.
I have also received an advertising email from Orange which in the small print at the end states: "*Speeds above 2mb are only available in certain areas". I presume this means that I am now stuck at 2mb even though my BT line is capable of much more.
I've not had any problems with speedtest in particular, although I do have vague recollections of having to uninstall ZoneAlarm and re-install it for some strange reason
Interesting to read that some of you have been capped at 2272 since migration to LLU. This happened to my friend so now that her contract was nearly over I phoned to cancel and (wait for it) not only have they made her a great offer but having complained about the speed the next day her connection shot up to 3600, her attenuation is 49 and she is quite a distance from the exchange but its amazing what Orange can do when they want to.

I have just checked my member account at Orange to see what it says about my speed after recently being LLU'd:
change your home broadband speed
get a faster connection
Your current broadband speed is: 7Meg
You can upgrade up to: 3Meg
Upgrade cost: free
Changing your speed means you'll be starting a new 12 month contract from the date your speed change has completed. We'll email you to confirm the change.
Remember!
Not all phone lines can deliver the speed quoted. But we'll automatically give you the highest speed your line can support - at the same price.
It seems that even though I have been capped at 2272 since the recent LLU at Chester they are showing my current speed as 7 meg and saying that I can have a FREE uprgrade to 3 meg subject to a new 12 month contract.
It does not make sense to me!!!
Is this a way of getting you to extend your contract by promising a downgrade in speed?

My current contract already states that I will be on either 8 meg or the highest speed possible for my connection.
To reduce my speed from over 3 meg to 2272 and then expect me to extend my contract for a further 12 months to go back up to 3 meg, which I was on before being LLU'd, is very devious and probably a breach of contract.
I'm not criticising anyone but if only the complainants to this site contacted OFCOM instead or as well as, then OFCOM would soon realise the extent of the problem.

or is it just another load of nonsense.
Least little excuse and they want to start a new contract probably trying to hang on to the many peed off customers.
I agree with borednow more should complain to Ofcom and the ISPA i did and it got me my MAC off them quickly rather than them hanging up everytime i asked, and that was before MAC's were compulsary.

The system doesn't recognise going up or down in speed as different, it just sees a different speed is available so you can change it and that begins the new contract.
