I have recently had good & bad from Wanaorange (see the Forum section on praiseworthy bits about Orange).
Which meant that a senior techy guy talked me through installing a Livebox over the 'phone without using the CD. It is cabled to my pc and wireless to my laptop.
Now sometimes I like to work at this pc without being "connected" to B/Band. In the old Speedtouch days I could always close it down from the Taskbar via the icon but I have no Livebox icons now (presumably because it was installed "manually"). I know I can switch the L/Box power supply off but I'm told that this is unwise to keep doing this.
Sorry to be so stupid but I just want an on/off switch on my Desktop so that I can stop crap even trying to access the pc. Any ideas ?
TIA
p.s. Sorry, one more question. What do all the lights mean on the Livebox ? I know that I don't have a connection if the @ light is flashing but what are all the others telling me ?
There's no simple way unless someone can script the following.
You could go into network connections and simply right click the connection and disable it. Hardly the best method but it'll turn off the internet.
Lights are as follows:
"!" - Generally the livebox thinks it's broken (flashes during normal startup for 20-30 seconds)
"@" - Connection status, solid is connected, slow flash not logged in, fast flash unable to syncronise with the exchange
>> - Data transmission/receiving, basically data is going through or being handled by the livebox
Phone - Talk service, solid means activated and has a number assigned, flashing means incoming call or in use
Antenne/Mic/"Axe" - Pairing light, flashing means in pairing mode (new devices with the wep key can connect) solid means not in pairing mode, off usually means wireless off.
1. Go to network connections, right click the connection & select 'properties'
2. Check the box next to 'show icon in notification area...'
This should ensure an icon appears in the notification area of the task bar (bottom right of screen) while connected. To turn off, simply right click the icon and select disable. The icon should remain with a 'X' indicating disconnected. To re-connect, right-click and select 'enable'.
If the icon disappears when you select disable, do the following:
1. right click on the taskbar, select 'properties'
2. tick the 'hide inactive icons' checkbox
3. press the 'customise' button
4. find your connection in the list and set the behavior to 'Always show'
5. Press 'OK' and 'Apply'
This should ensure the icon always appears in the bottom right area of the screen...
...however, Mr Gates always likes to throw a spanner in. There is a glitch on windows which may result in the icon disappearing when you disable the connection, even though you have set it to always show (this is the case on my PC). If this happens you have to go back into network connections, right click the connection & select 'enable'. I found some info on correcting this glitch, but it did not look worth the aggro for the inconvenience it causes me. If you are lucky you will not have the glitch, and you will then have a simple on/off switch.
Of course disabling your network connection will disconnect you from any other computers on your network as well as from the internet.
Well well well, thanks Gezr. I've done this and I've certainly got the monitors icon in the Notification area, I've also told the system to "always show" it. However it is interesting to hear what you say about it disappearing sometimes when you disable it.
I once did all this before when I was using my Netgear setup and I seem to remember having a bit of hassle getting it to enable again.
When I right click on the icon and attempt the disable option I get a message saying "it is not possible to disconnect at this time. The connection is currently busy with a connect or disconnect operation"
Oh well, worth a try I suppose. I assume that I can still go to Internet Connections and disable it from there but that seems a bit clumsy each time.
You have 2 different connections - one is the internet gateway, the other is the local area connection. The internet gateway is governed by the local area connection.
Hopefully you have 2 network icons at the bottom right area on the screen - one for each of the above. You won't be allowed to disable the 'internet connection' but if you disable the 'local area connection' it will automatically close the internet connection - & vice versa when you enable it. (that's how it works on my PC anyway...)
If you only have 1 network icon, then you can go through the process again to create an icon for the local area connection.

Good luck
Yes, I've got 2 icons and I can use one of them to disable the connection but then both the icons disappear and so I can't right click to enable again. This is even when I have taken the "always show" option in Notification Properties. Going back to Network Connections is a bit of a pain but if that's the way it is then that's the way it is.
Mr & Mrs Gates's little boy sure does have a mean streak some days.
I am enjoying all your help and I'm very grateful.

We're in the same boat.

Doesn't he just!
The penny has just dropped as to why the icons disappear...'always show' will show the connection when it is enabled but not connected (which is why I see it on my laptop when the ethernet cable is unplugged - the connection is enabled, but not connected). So it's never going to show when its disabled. Sorry - bum steer, apart from the easy disable bit!
