Hi,
This question is a bit technical, but I am sure someone here knows the answer.
My parents use a web-based email account to communicate with me, and to save the hassle of me remembering their ISP details (when they phone me for tech support), I have always let them use my Freeserve/Wanadoo dialup account to get their connection to the web.
Now with the "number change" etc from Orange, they can't connect. They've tried downloading the "connection kit" etc but still cannot connect. so now I want to go and visit them and fix the situation for them. So, now my question... does the connection kit do anything more than change the dialup number and email pop/smtp details, or are there any registry or other settings that I also need to tweak? I want to go armed with everything I need to fix the problem in one visit...
Thanks in advance for very detailed answers...
Kevin
the Orange Connection Kit is an autodialer to change the phone number used if the initial call fails to connect due to network traffic (too many users) or if the call drops.
It doesn't make any changes to the registry pertaining to the user account, as it uses the account settings already setup.
One thing to make sure of is Windows compatibility.
Its best to be running Windows 2000, or XP, though it should work with Windows 98. Also, ensure that the version of Windows on the PC is as current as possible, so make sure you have the most current update installers. If you are going to your parents who currently don't have a connection, it would be advisable to download the full installers of update rollouts from Microsoft for the OS version they use.
The other thing to be sure of is Internet Explorer should be current.
If you can get hold of a copy of the latest Orange CD, it should have the correct software on it to dial up. There were some problems with the actual registration, signup and retrieval webpages on the server end, but these should be fixed now.
You should empty the Internet Explorer cache and all temporary files on the computer to remove any old pages loading back up. Look under options.
With a fresh Orange CD (if you have one), make sure you delete the existing network dialup connections, then run the installer off the Cd and follow the instructions.
The fresh installer should use the correct new number, but you may have to create a new Pay As You Go account if you cannot remember your login details to retrieve.
Also, make sure you take a note of the Orange Support phone number, in case you get stuck!
thanks for the reply... I guess I should have mentioned they're using XP on a P4 machine with IE6 installed, and I have been told that Windows Updates are performed weekly... no PC based mail in use, so it really is just the web access that's causing a problem. I have the relevant logon details for my account so that should not be a problem. I should also mention that this is a Pay-as-you-go connection.
I do not have the latest Orange CD, where can I get one of those?
Do you have to use the autodialler, or can I just use the 147008089916080 number that the Orange Help pages refer to? Are there any other numbers I can put in as alternates?
Thanks in advance.
Kevin

A neighbour had a similar problem.
Wasn't connecting. I picked up his phone when it was dialing and head the familiar "The number you have dialed has not been recognised"
Turns out the dialing rules was on. Turned that off and put the whole number in.
Connected no problems.
From my time on dial-up I sometimes had to put a pause into the number so BT would recognise it. The pause is a comma ,
You could try changing the number to 1470,08089916080
