I switched from BT to Orange 1 month ago and after getting 7meg from BT on my line now I find I'm stuck at 2meg with Orange. I'm on an upto 8meg connection with them with an estimated 7.5meg speed given to me prior to switching.
I've phoned them a good few times about this (I won't get into the frustration i've had speaking to the lovely people of India about my problem!) but to no avail. Ive had a line test done with the BT speedtester with these results :-
1st test 01/11/07 - 2.45pm
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6269 kbps
Thing is, they say there is no problem with the line or connection but every other speed test done, for example almost daily at www.speedtest.net, shows me running at around 2meg. The web and downloads are definately slower than when with BT.
So what is going on here, am I at 2meg or is the "throughput" on the BT speedtest my actual speed. I would be surpised if all the other speed tests were not giving me the right result.
Sorry for the long messege but i'm a bit confused and not sure what to do next about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Well the BT test showed you got an actual speed of over 6 meg on a 7meg profile which is pretty good and means there's no real fault there. The connection seeming to run at 2 meg means it's more likely down to network traffic and contention.
Thanks for the reply. I'm just surprised that every other speed test has shown between 2 and 2.1 meg. I'm talking about 20 odd done at speedtest.net over 3 weeks and plenty at zdnet and thinkbroadband. Every one has come back at 2 meg, none have reached anywhere near the speed shown by the BT one. There has got to be something up here hasn't there?
You've probably been capped at 2mb to keep a stable line. It happened to me before i left Orange. It sounds like you're on the unstable llu set up which if it isn't capped can cause random and frequent disconnections as the Orange software is pants.
Nyhder. All of my speedtests, which have been done at times of peak traffic, in the evening, and at quiet times, such as 7.00am, have come back at around 2meg. They still are doing so. Only the BT one shows the results above. I really don't have a clue why there is disparity between them.
I would like to get to the bottom of this but as the days go by i'm kinda resigning myself to just putting up with it. I can't be bothered phoning Orange again as they just don't have any answers, and can't seem to understand my accent too well anyway!
