i had a BT line. and it was sweet. the speed and the emails. i use thunderbird for emails. no problems.
but now i had moved to london. the flat that i stay in has an Orange connection. i hadnt changed any settings on my laptop and suddenly i was unable to send mails. receiving is fine. but sending doesnt work.
when i told my hosting provider, eukhost, about this, they said that they were able to send and receive emails on my domain without any problems. after a long set of email communication with eukhost we reached a conclusion that Orange is indeed blocking port 25. eukhost told me to change the port to 26 & try telnet on it.
it worked. but not for long. that is, i had sent some test mails to my email on domain and another one on gmail. the one sent to domain seems reached fine, but any mail sent to gmail just wont reach. it says the mail was sent but i never ever receive any mail whatsoever.
eukhost have been great in tryin to solve the issue although i doubt if the issue if from their end. after reading the endless list of problems being faced by Orange customers i dont want to be pushing them. 17 emails to and fro and everything seems to be working on their end, seems they aren't on Orange. besides i cant be throwing stones on other houses when meself lives in a glass house.
For Outgoing Mail you have to use the Orange server.
This is in line with most other ISPs.
smtp server (outgoing): smtp.orangehome.co.uk

Generally true though you don't HAVE to use the Orange mail server.
There are always issues with sending mail using one ISP's server via the connection of another.
Even if connection and server are the same, there may also be problems on replies and forwards of mail previously received via other connections-I have recently experienced this when assisting somebody with a changeover from Sky to PlusNet.
I don't think that the 'urban legend' of blocking Port 25 to avoid spam is the only factor at work here.
The obvious strategy would be to use one of the Orange servers for outgoing mail though you will see, from dozens of posts elsewhere on this site, that said servers are beset with their own problems.
If you are 'moving around' with your computer, a rather more robust strategy is to use an ISP-independent SMTP server such as AUTHSMTP which I first saw advertised on this excellent site and have used successfully with several clients.

that i have already tried.
when i set tbird to use Orange smtp, the mails are sent but no one ever receives them. they are lost in eternity. never to come back. as if theres some kinda blackhole or something. a mail sucker.
nyways. lesking, i have read about these services but i dont really want to fork out any more monthly pay. there are already too many standing orders and adding one more will be it.
the problem still persists. mails are not reaching my gmail server. eukhost said they are sucessfully able to send and receive to and from gmail.

Relax... its Orange and they wont help you, they wont even admit its their fault, worst company out there. read my post about hotmail below this one...were doomed M8.

I can understand that it is galling to shell-out money for a service which you have already paid for.
Having said that, we are talking a one-off payment of £14 per annum for 1000 messages per month with a money-back guarantee if it doesn't work.
For several Orange users who have posted to this site, it did solve the problem 'instantly'
Gotta be worth a try (BTW, I use Port 2525 with AUTHSMTP)
