I have just acquired a Livebox. Up until now I have been very happily using a Netgear DG834. THe key problem I have hit so far in my swap over between Netgear and old ISP and Livebox/Orange impacts upon my most prized possession - my Sonos.
For anyone that doesnt know, Sonos is a wireless whole house music system which uses its own mesh wireless network and also picks up streaming radio through a router. Physical connection involve one Sonos box connecting to the router via ethernet, and your Network Attached Storage (in my case Buffalo) containing all the music attaching to the first Sonos box (which means then that you are only dependent on the router; you don't need the computer switched on to feed the music).
The problem I have is that when I plugged my Sonos box into the spare ethernet port on the Livebox last night, nothing happened. No music, anywhere in the entire house. Nor is the Buffalo contactable. On the Netgear, the way in which this was set was that the Sonos and the Buffalo had IP addresses assigned to them in Netgear settings as named permitted devices, and then everything was ok. But here, there doesnt seem to be the option for me to do that, and I cannot go through some sort of USB "Pairing" because there are no USB connections on Sonos boxes - only ethernet, optical and RCA leads.
Please can anyone help otherwise my next research item will be to do with getting Orange broadband through a Netgear. THe most annoying bit is that once I realised that I couldnt immediately play Sonos through the Livebox, I tried to switch back to the original Netgear, and it wont let me - it wont recognise the Netgear now for some reason.
THanks for any ideas / answers - Im posting this question everywhere, including on SOnos forums. I need my music.
Thanks. Unfortunately i need the phone package that comes with it because of the number of calls that the other half makes to the USA every week. So Im looking for a solution that works with the Livebox. Some-one on a Sonos forum has suggested that it should all just "plug and play" based on his Livebox, although he is based in France and, who knows, maybe the configuration is slightly different over there. But I'll have another fiddle based on his recommendations. One suggestion he had is that I plug the NAS directly into the Livebox, and not go through the Sonos first. ANy other thoughts very gratefully received.
When you originally setup the Sonos did you assign it an IP address within it's own setup at all? This would explain the problem if it was on a different address range. EG if the netgear was 192.168.0.x and the livebox uses 192.168.1.x
Generally if it plugs in with ethernet is should just work as most things grab addresses automatically, although static services such as this on a network are usually better with a fixed address like mentioned above.
Hi, Thanks for all the comments. They did all used to have their own assigned IP addresses but ..... I unplugged everything at the weekend and started all over again, right from the beginning. It worked! So the yellow ethernet socket does work, and I now have the following set up - Sonos box 1 plugged into Livebox yellow ethernet socket. NAS plugged into Sonos box 1. Three other Sonos boxes around the house wirelessly communicating with Sonos box 1 over their own network. Main PC plugged into red ethernet socket on Livebox. MacBookPro laptop communicating wirelessly with Livebox. There's one last thing I have to sort out (job for this weekend) which is to link up my wireless Dell printer with the Livebox, which will be interesting... (it has its own dedicated wireless box thing which used to communicate with the Netgear through an assigned IP address). Some-one suggested on another forum that the Livebox could not support this many devices, but everything ok so far, thank god.
Right, thanks for the clarification. THe suggestion on other forums had been that the limit of 6 related to anything, whether it was a wireless link or a wired link, thus others were suggesting that the reason why I was having problems was because I had too many things connecting to the box ... clearly not correct but useful to be clarified. Ignoring wired items, I think I've got 5 wireless items talking to the Livebox now, so hopefully I will just about squeeze in the last item, the wireless printer ....
