My connection has ALWAYS been slow, since day one, which was on january. After been taken round the houses the past few months just gave up on it and stopped using it. Anyway rang tech support today to have a gppd moan at the lovely old 50p a minute and the woman (indian) pretending to be british which is always good for a chuckle told me
wait for it
Disable your anti virus and disable your firewall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why?
Because it slows dows my internet connection, I started laughing at her, I couldnt help it what a bunch of bloody lemons. Im still laughing!!!
Ok, now to serious not, I upgraded my mobile to an 18month to take advantage of the free net, its never worked since day one, I get better speeds using an old 56k modem (no seriously) can I still cancel my Orange internet, its never worked, and the tech support is anything but. I still have a few months left on my contract but id rather pay to get net that actually works than a free service that doesnt.
I wish I had recorded that call now, it was priceless!!! Im tempted to ring back get the same woman and see if she says the same
to be fair, on a slow computer running windows ME, I did find that kapersky did slow my machine right down. I ended up disabling the HTML protection element, and things sped up again for me
You cant cancel your mobile contract, the internet is a seperate contract and as it is free you can cancel that at any time.
And yes to be fair it was a valid request to ask you to turn of your security, it may not have fixed it but its the first thing to try. If you want to get to the bottom of it start of with the Orange homepage help site and search for kb165 if nothing there helps run a speed test.
That is exactly what they told me to do too!! Unbelievable....I said "No, im not compromising my security, I know that will not work so I am not prepared to do it. Are you going to pay for my computer to be rebuilt if I get hacked or a virus?" "Oh, dont worry, it is all built into the livebox!!!"
What a load of rubbish! My antivirus software periodically finds virus trying to get in, so there is no way the livebox is reliable enough to turn off all other virus/firewall products. NO FREEKING WAY!!!!!!! After that whole joke, I was then told that "Engineers were sending slow speeds down my line". Hahahahahahahaha!!!!
Today I was told that after waiting for 9 months for my internet to creep above 2 mb, (Hasnt happened yet) that the speed is slow because when you get internet from Orange, the slow speeds are from the beginning and that is how it works!!!! EXACT WORDS PEOPLE!!!!! Although I am not 100% convinced he knew what he was saying, it sounded like he was reading from a script but couldn't read very well. Oh dear, this is a big mess.....ORANGE NEED TO INVEST IN SOME QUALIFIED TECH SUPPORT STAFF AND SPEND SOME OF THE MONEY THEIR LOYAL CUSTOMERS ARE FEEDING INTO THEIR FAT BELLY EVERY MONTH.
Disabling security is a reasonable request, as a test for a short period, running without security unless you know what you're doing is never recommended.
The livebox doesn't do antivirus but does have a firewall. If you don't check your email and any sites you visit are larger sites you trust then it's pretty safe.

I have shut down all the stuff that runs in the background including
anti virus, firewall and pop up blockers as a troubleshooting exercise
in the past. I would assume that is what Orange TS were asking you to do
and I would suggest that this is a legitimate troubleshooting exercise.
I wouldn't have thought that they were suggesting for one minute that
you should run unprotected in order to get an increase in performance -
although on second thoughts!!!!!! Unfortunately it would seem that this
simplistic type of scripted response is all that Orange TS can ever
provide to their customers. If the customers problem is anything other
than finger trouble then they might just as well save themselves a 50p a
minute phone call to Orange TS for all the benefit that they will gain
from talking to those plonkers.

you people moaning about this being a stupid request are the ones who know nothing.
Disabling your firewall and AntiVirus is a Legitemate request when it comes to Troubleshooting connection issues.
I work in IT support and i disable and re-enable firewalls all the time to cure issues.
disabling it for a short period is NOT going to make your machine a virus infested place, it simply allows testing without the interfeerence from 3'rd party software.

Now if I was trying to add an xp machine to the domain and the xp firewall was turned on, then yeah fair enough, but considering, the Orange connection was working (albeit VERY VERY slowly) turning of the firewall wont make any difference imho, seriouly how much can a routerfirewall slow down the Orange connection? to the point of stopping it completely?!?!?!?!? I dont think so.
And if you read my original post, I said that the woman said disable your firewall, she did not at any point say turn it back on after a while.
Also explain to me how my antivirus can stop my internet connection, I genuinely want to know that one, no offense meant, just want to know,
If you are going on the sense that it scans every single file that I am downloading, on a amd turion 64 dual core with 2gig ram, if it chews up THAT much resources that it kills the connection then its a bad piece of av. Im using sophos (supplied via work) and never ever heard of anyone at work or otherwise having a poblem with it, I know its not the best av on the planet but it does the job for me.
