Just to let you know, I've finally decided to take the plunge and leave Orange. After 6 weeks of no service I was told today to "call back for an update in 5 days"... So I rang customer service and asked to cancel (I'd previously spoken to BT who'd told me I would need to do a full cease and re-provide). I got no argument from the customer service agent (after I told her to check my account history in response to her "why would you like to cancel?". So, now I'm just waiting for my line to clear before I order up BT... Apparently I can't do it yet (according to the website) which kind of suits me as I have a BT engineer coming on monday to check our wiring (We have don't have the good type of line box and there's a cople of wires hanging out where the line comes into the flat)...
Anyways, orange cancellations told me it should take 3-5 days for my line to clear... Then I'll be home free and with a potential speed of 4.5Mb (Unless any wiring fixes improve this!)
Cheers all for the support, I hope you all get your problems fixed soon!

Hiya Paul,
I hope you have better luck with your new ISP.
If you don't mind sharing the information here, I'd be interested to know whether you ordered this via BT Sales (150) or BT Faults (151), whether they fit an NTE5 Master for you and also how much they charge you.
I think I called technical support at BT... but I could be wrong... I got passed around to a couple of people too... there was some confusion over what constituted a master socket so I'm hoping I can get them to install a new one for free (since what must be my master socket looks like a standard extension socket and has the very old BT logo on it - the one with the capital T...I think it's BT...) That and the fact that where the wire comes into the flat, the wiring is very dodgy (there's a couple of - probably unused - wires hanging out and the wires just drop from where they enter (at window level) to the floor with no fixings etc... I did read somewhere that all wiring that is between the master socket and the exchange is BT property, so if it's crap they're obliged to repair it for free... Anyways, we'll see what happens... if they charge a lot, I'll pass it onto my landlord and hope he coughs up!
Ok, so... engineer came today, told me there wasn't a problem with my wiring (after a couple of line tests), but agreed it hadn't been done very well and so said he'd replace the wire from the entry to the master socket and replace the master if I wanted. So, I got him to replace the master socket with an NTE5 socket and re-do the wiring. He also checked out my extension sockets and found that I had too main sockets! So he took out the extra (relacing it with an extension)
As for the cost, I can't tell you yet as he said I'd be billed in a few days, I'll post it here when I know.
In one final twist, he also told me (after I'd explained the my Orange problems) that he'd just come from the Earl's court exchange where he'd fixed a problem with the Orange systems! So having cancelled my account friday, the problem may have been fixed today! Typical! Oh well, after the crap customer service I think I'm better off out of it anyways!!
I'll let you know of the price of the callout when I know (I'll also be passing the bill on to my landlord!)
