Ok tried everything I could without opening the pc up with no joy, ethenet connection looked ok inside so I went into the BIOS, Integrated Peripherals, onchip PCI device and found that the on chip LAN was disabled!!! why i ask you why? my pc was build from scratch by someone else so i guess these things are to be expected.
Turned it on and hey presto evrything works, downloaded drivers for it no probs! The one thing I don't understand now is the bios gave me the option to 'decide whether to invoke the boot ROM of the onborad LAN chip' It was disabled so i left it like that, everything seems to be ok but does anyone know what this means and if i should have it enabled?
