I was offered an upgrade to the 8mb service but told it would be another 12 month contract, i took the offer up.
My line will support 2mb or greater but my speeds since upgrading have been all over the place, most of the time i am getting less than 512kbps.
I have done speed tests and have got different results:
Speedtest.net
Thinkbroaband.com (without port 80)
Date 10/10/07 22:04:44
Speed Down 562.25 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps )
Speed Up 292.35 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
Port 8095 Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk
With port 80 checked
Date 10/10/07 22:13:10
Speed Down 1649.69 Kbps ( 1.6 Mbps )
Speed Up 311.06 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
Port 80
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk
My router is a belkin wireless G mimo and the settings show:
Type Interleave
Status No Defect
Data rate (Kbps)
Downstream: 2016
Upstream: 448
Noise margin (dB) 6.3 17.0
Output power (dBm) 16.3 11.9
Attenuation (dB) 63.5 31.5
Those stats show you're on a pretty long line and that you'll be lucky to get it running at 2 meg, infact those stats would at best give you 1.75 meg currently.
You need to know the current profile for the line. Go to:
http://speedtester.BT.com/
Go through the test, if it gives an error just try again later as it can get pretty busy. You'll likely get a 1750 IP Profile result from the sounds of things and if so then thats a good result.
