Hi guys I'm looking for some help. Had my broadband connection with Orange upgraded to max in june this year. Things have been going great with speeds of between 3.5 and 3.9 mb but for the last week my speed has been getting lower and lower and I am curently getting speed of less than 2mb!. I checked the wiring and found a damaged telephone cable which I replaced but speeds are still low at just 2mb
stats before upgrade:
ADSL Top Refresh ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 15.3
Attenuation (dB) : 57.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 4384
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Ok looks like you upgraded from a 2 meg IPStream connection onto ADSL Max.
Appears something has definitely gone wrong somewhere, for a lesser speed your margin has reduced dramatically. At that current sync rate you're probably profiled at 1.75 meg.
First thing I'd suggest is try going to your master phone socket. If you can unscrew the lower half and try connecting your livebox through a filter into the socket behind the front. If the downstream rate (your speed won't go up instantly) increases then it means there's something else wrong with the wiring.
If you can't take off the front then just connect into the socket and disconnect everything else from the phone line and check the downstream rate.
Thank you for the prompt reply. I am my wits end. Tonight I will try your suggestions and post back my results. Todays stats are :
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Interleave
Noise margin (dB) : 11.0
Attenuation (dB) : 57.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 2304
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 2080 448
Any idea why the noise margin has changed yet again? Is it a good or a bad thing?
Unless it's the livebox, which I highly doubt in this case, how will switching the connection alter the signal being generated by the BT exchange equipment and which is being sent over the BT line? This works even better if you mention migration, migrate to another ADSL Max service will likely just alter a few pieces of system information and do nothing to change the physical connection meaning the problem goes with you.
Thank you for your suggestions. I rewired my internal telephone wiring and have now plugged my livebox into the BT master socket. Hooray, success!
Check this:
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Interleave
Noise margin (dB) : 5.9
Attenuation (dB) : 57.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 3744
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 3456 448
Is the noise margin good or bad? I have no problems or disconnects etc. and everything seems to be working fine.
Thanks again.
Looks OK to me considering you must be some distance from your exchange.
If you have extension boxes, provided the cabling from the BT linebox is in good condition and routed well then there should be no reason not to use them.

It's a tiny bit low but what's important is that the connection is stable. There's no good or bad noise margin due to how ADSL Max and LLU works, think of it like a set of scales. 6 is the standard target margin and is put on one side of the scales, the rest of the remaining margin is put on the other side and it's this pile that is used to trade for speed.
So high margin is good but when on a service like this you normally expect to see it at 6.
