I apologise in advance if this info is old hat to some of you.
I thought the OpenDNS resolution was slow this afternoon, so I reverted the
XP network config to "obtain DNS address automatically" and saw that my
Netgear router picked up the Orange DNS server addresses. The DNS was still
slow, however. I then did "ipconfig /all" and saw that it still had the OpenDNS
server addresses registered. Hmmmm...
I then tried "ipconfig /registerdns" and it registered the router's IP address
as the DNS server address, according to XP. My internet response is now
blistering, even with the router pointing at the Orange DNS servers instead of
OpenDNS.
So, point XP at the router as the "DNS server" and let the router talk to the DNS
provider. Sorry if I've taught some of you to suck eggs.

Did you have your PC configured to OpenDNS servers too? as they wouldnt work as good if it wasn't or is that what you mean that you have just done?
Actually, I just realised I made a mistake in my posting. Here's what I actually did...
* XP network config was originally set to the OpenDNS addresses (as you
were asking).
* I changed the DNS assignment in XP automatic.
* I then made DNS assignment automatic in the router (it had been pointing at OpenDNS).
* I noticed that web resolutions were still delayed and nslookups timed out.
* "ipconfig /all" showed that the XP network config still contained the
OpenDNS server addresses. That puzzled me for a minute or two.
* I then looked at the command options for ipconfig to see if I could force
XP to point to the Orange servers. This was my naive intention at the time.
* I ran "ipconfig /registerdns" and it replaced the OpenDNS addresses with
the router address 192.168.0.2.
* I tried surfing etc and it was immediate: no waits at all.
* It then dawned on me that XP was now using the router as the fast middle
man to talk to the Orange DNS servers.
I'll try OpenDNS again tomorrow, even though Orange DNS is good right now.

Thats bizarre your router address is 192.168.0.1 ...192.168.0.2 is your PC/adaptor address or one of them if you have several pc's connected and they are not public addresses if your router isnt pointing to OpenDNS they must be using Oranges.

Yes, another sloppy mistake by me. Apologies. It is indeed the NIC IP address.

Seems like a conflict somewhere i would leave it if you are not having problems at the moment but if it does start giving you problems try ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew then reboot. If you still have your TC/IP configured to OpenDNS on your pc that might be why your still accessing the internet ok.

The TCP/IP on my PC is configured to automatic DNS server assignment,
not the OpenDNS addresses.
The XP TCP/IP must be using the router as a proxy to talk to the Orange
DNS servers, as the Orange DNS addresses are set in the router config.
For example:-
Thanks very much for chatting with me, but I must now revel in my improved
internet performance and do some homework ;-{
I'll reply tomorrow, if required.

I played around again with the Netgear DG834 DNS settings whilst leaving the
XP net config as "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
When the router is assigned the OpenDNS addresses and I run "ipconfig /registerdns", then "ipconfig /all" and nslookup show the OpenDNS address as the DNS server in their output.
When the router is set to obtain DNS server addresses automatically from the ISP and I run "ipconfig /registerdns", then ipconfig and nslookup show the IP address of the router as the DNS server.
The XP net config dialogue box continues to show "Obtain DNS server address automatically", as I would expect.
This is reproducible every time, toggling between the OpenDNS and automatic DNS assignments.
