A colleague has just got a Livebox which he wants to use to get cheap phone calls. Currently, he has a Netgear DG834 router which I'd like to leave in place as it handles a vpn tunnel to another organisation, DHCP and provides a good firewall. The VPN tunnel is the critical bit.
So, I'd like to connect both boxes, with the Livebox just providing the telephone service. Orange say that this is possible but won't tell me how. From a look at some of the threads here, it seems that the Livebox has to be plugged straight into the splitter. My thoughts are that perhaps I can plug the Netgear into the Livebox, disable the Internet logon on the Livebox and just enable the telephone service in the config. Another thought is to connect both boxes independently to different splitters disabling the Internet logon on the Livebox. If someone could give me some guidance, I would appreciate it greatly.
The device connected to the phone line, the livebox in this case must have the username and password entered as it's the one to control the ADSL modem that will be connecting.
Normally you'd set the netgear to a static IP in the livebox's address range, set DMZ to that IP in the livebox and disable DHCP on the netgear so only one of them handles giving out IP's. This however means everything goes through the livebox and that may effect the VPN setup. The only way to find out would be to try it though.
Many thanks, Elhana. Appreciate your help. I'll try it as you suggest but somehow get the feeling that the VPN is dead in the water if we go down this route. The only other thought I've had is to enable a "pass through" if the LiveBox has one. I'll check in the config to see.
I am thinking of taking the new Orange service, but want to keep my Netgear DG834PN wireless router as it is fab, with very good wireless range. I also have a work VPN which must be kept in place.
I was wondering if it is possible to setup with both routers in the following way, which would mean that I can still work as now :-
1. Netgear connected to phone line, so as to use the netgear firewall, DCHP and wireless services are used.
2. Connect Computer to netgear router and other network devices ( as now )
3. Connect Livebox to the netgear via TCPIP port.
4. Turn off ADSL modem in livebox
5. Turn off DCHP in Livebox.
5. Still use second line from livebox.
In this configuration, will the livebox work, and will the second line work ?
I know that there may be some QOS issues like this, as the netgear router cannoot priotise data, but this will not be an issue for us.
