I have joined this forum for a little advice.
I was with Freeserve, then Wanadoo (with no problems at all) and now Orange.
Out of the blue I now have problems downloading programs/updates/drivers etc.
The download box will open but will either not start at all or will start to download and then hang part way through. This did not happen everytime (I did actually manage to download some things ) but on average I have serious problems downloading.
This problem has never occurred before and now its here it is showing no signs of going away.
I have tried downloading with IE6, IE7 and even Firefox but still no difference.
I had my hard drive formatted and Windows XP reinstalled hoping that any dodgy settings would be cleared out. I got the PC back and lo and behold the problem still exists!!
This makes me think that it is not a problem with my system or computer.
I ran a Dr Speedtouch diagnostic. It stated that my computer was fine, my isp was fine and my modem was fine, but when it came to checking the internet I got:
Connecting to a Website Failed
Dr SpeedTouch was unable to reach a Website via HTTP.
This is typically due to an incorrect Proxy Server configuration. Using a Proxy Server is currently disabled.
Please make sure no Firewall or local proxy software is preventing Dr SpeedTouch from connecting to the Internet.
Verify your service provider installation instructions for Proxy Server configuration and press the link below to verify or reconfigure your computer's Internet Settings.
Now I have never had to use proxy settings before in all the 8-9 years I have had the internet. I looked up the Orange proxy settings and tried it out of interest - no change though! Therefore proxy settings removed.
I know its not the firewall as Dr Speedtouch has access and on top of that I turned off my firewall and ran the test again - still the same result!
I am now at the end of my tether and am wonder after all this - is this an Orange problem and nothing to do with my system???
