I am supposed to have a 8Mbs broadband connection using an Alcatel Speed touch USB.
On regularly checking the actual speed, I find in reality that I have a download speed of well below 700KBS and upload speed of about 250KBS
Not only is my connection slow, but worse still the connection is constantly going down and repeated attempts to reconnect fail.
Often the only way to connect is to restart the computer, which I sometimes have to do many times a day, and all works well for a while (sometimes the connection remains for as long as 15 minutes! )
This is far from the original promise made by Freeserve of a constant online connection and 8Mbs speed (Ok, I don't really expect 8Mbs, but 1 or 2 would be nice)
Has anyone else had a similar problem ? and is there a solution that does not involve frustrating, expensive telephone calls to the Orange technical help line ?
My technical comprehension and skills are limited, but would be most grateful for any suggestions that could help me fix the problem myself.
Are you connected to the main BT linebox or an extension ?
If an extension, try connecting into the BT linebox.
If you have a frontplate with a removable bottom half, remove it and plug into the test socket inside, DO NOT use a filter. This gives you the "cleanest" signal.
Then while connected get your router stats and post here.

Thanks for your contribution. Yes my computer is connected to an extension box, as it has always been (for about a year without any problems at all). Unfortunately the proximity of the BT linebox does not allow easy access to my desktop.
It may very well be the case that there is a problem with the line connection which I will attempt to check out, but suspect that the problem may lie elsewhere.
With reference to obtaining my router stats... unfortunately I don't really understand what these are or how to get them, but will further add that on occasion I have been able to check my connection and found the connection was good, but was still unable to access email or websites without restarting the computer, then all connected without a problem ? ? ?
Thanks again for your suggestion
The line stats are useful in these sorts of cases. I think I added a link to the guide for how to do it with a speedtouch modem in the 8 meg forum's useful links thread.
