Hello, I've never found this site before but I've searched many times over for helping with Orange Problems as I've had my fair share
Just wondering if you guys could help clarify whether this is Orange, my line, or something at my end.
Anyway, I never had any problems with Freeserve, very few with Wanadoo, but Orange is like a pit of dispair for me. I joined up with Freeserve's dial up about 7 maybe 8 years ago, not sure it could have been longer. Got broadband as soon as it was available and have been taken for a ride since then.
About 3 or 4 months ago I was getting stupidly slow speeds, then after about a week was getting disconnected every 20-40 minutes depending on the time of the day, after numerous line tests, all from different members of their staff it went away by itself, but after a month they hadn't found a problem not sent out a engineer to help fix it. I believe the same problem may be upon me again.
About 4 days ago I started getting slow connection speeds, I'm an avid gamer and probably have the worst ISP for playing games on my PC, I got this current PC to play games, all the best stuff etc, but at the moment I'm getting Pings/Latency of 1,500ms+ Making even games that don't require quick reaction times etc unplayable. To get Orange's phone number I had to find it on all the stuff I'd written down after the last problem as I couldn't get on their home page it was taking so long to load, even Google takes up to a minute to load.
I don't have the option to change as some people would as I don't have access to an LLU code because I've been using the same line for so long or something. I don't know much about the technical side of the internet I'm afraid but if anything can help anyone find out what's wrong I'll give it a go and get the results you need.
You can leave Orange - ring them up and ask for your MAC code.
Once you receive this pass it onto your new ISP which will enable you to switch over easily.
Orange are always telling people that many ISP s do not accept their LLU MAC codes. They also delay giving them out or give out incorrect ones.
By law they have to issue you with this so don't take any excuses.
Idnet, BT & BE are just a few of the ISP s who are fast and reliable & also accept LLU MAC codes.
Don't feel trapped by Orange they are just a lying, robbing excuse for an ISP.
Last year I had slow pings, like yourself, then disconnection for 2 weeks.
I got sick of the bull excuses when I rang up each time like their famous 'line fault, ring back in 48 hours after tests'.
I see, they always told me no ISPs accept LLU MAC Codes when I was on the phone. How long would a transfer take with an LLU MAC Code? Is it a matter of days or a few weeks? Thanks alot for the quick response, also a list of ISPs who accept LLU MAC Codes who are reliable would be nice too. Thanks for any info you give

Hi im afraid Orange is lying as per usual they plenty accept LLU MAC codes they CANNOT refuse to give you one within 5 working days click this link List of ISP's that accept LLU MACs there is probably more by now, insist on a MAC if they still claim the same tell them you will report them to Ofcom. Migrations with an LLU MAC usually take about 10 days with around 30 minutes downtime
Good Luck

Orange just lie and rob - get out while you can.
They tell you absolutely anything to try and get your money yet provide a slow service at the very most.
When you request your MAC code from them they then have 5 working days to issue it to you, usually by email.
They CANNOT refuse to give you one - it's the law from this year.
You then ring your new chosen ISP, give them the MAC and you should be changed over within 10 days.
If Orange give you a false MAC code (which they do often) you can do what I did.
I cancelled my broadband, waited 10 days for the line to be cleared of their broadband and then went to Idnet.
Note you do have to pay a re-connection charge this way (£47 with Idnet) but I was stuck waiting for a MAC for 2 weeks so had no choice.
Firstly thanks alot for all of the information and help. It seems that changing over is going to be the best thing to do.
Orange told me something a little worrying though, they said because I had an LLU MAC I would never get a very good connection whether I changed or not. They said for it to improve at all I would have to cancel are rejoin, they even said that if I did that with them it would get better. By the sounds of things they're lying to me but I'd just like to make sure.
I phoned BT today and I was wondering if that would be a good choice to go with or if anyone had any better suggestions?
Sorry for all the questions but I want to make the right choice and not regret my decision. Thanks alot again

They are talking a load of crap an LLU MAC is just a key so you can change providers its nothing to do with anything else it's blatant lies you do NOT need to cancel your account just insist on a MAC then hand it to the new provider of your choice and they will take it from there and give you a switchover date migration is free, if you cancel you will need to pay a fee to a new provider for re-connection.
They get a commision for keeping customers check here for an ISP ratings list there you will see Orange at the bottom where they rightfully belong.
Once again thanks to everyone. I really appreciate all of the advice and will be making my choice between Be and BT. I'm not sure which to go to as on the website Steve linked Be has a much higher rating than BT and I'm not sure if that's just a few disgruntled customers rating BT with 1s or if it's a more true to life situation.

Have you checked the BT forum here here ? theres also a lot of BT posters here
Most of the large ISP's are low rated usually due to poor customer and technical services you can also read the customer comments on the ratings link too to see what they have to say.

Thanks again :O You've all been a really big help, I'm currently leaning towards Be, I was just wondering though from when I give them the LLU MAC Code how long does it normally take for my internet to be switched over? BT Said it would be around 5 days but when I was on the phone to the guy at Be he mentioned 1 to 3 weeks which seemed a little excessive but I'm not sure.

It usually takes 10 days with Be with an LLU MAC he was probably being cautious you should get a date within hours of ordering once they validate your that your MAC is valid, But no matter how long it takes you shouldnt have anydowntime until the actual day of the migration mine was 20 minutes.

It's also worth noting that even with an LLU MAC some ISP's will choose to pass their charges to change it over from BTW, which is roughly about the same amount. They should be pretty upfront about this like all charges, it depends on the ISP if they choose to charge you this.
Little update for those who are interested. Supposedly there's more works going on on my line that'll take up to a month to complete, they don't know what the problem is, nor do they have an exact date when it will be sorted. I asked for my LLU MAC Code and should hopefully have it and be switched before I notice an improvement, even if it takes the longest possible time for me to get my MAC Code, then for Be to switch me over Orange still wouldn't have sorted my line.
And that's a multi million pound company, how are they even still a float.
