Having just recently bought myself a xbox 360 and had been using live via Orange/wanadoo livebox with a wired connection (360 - livebox - phoneline) without any problems. I've since switched to a netgear DG834G router and had assumed it would be just as straight forward.
But now i can't connect. I tried the "test live connection" I'm getting as far as DNS option before failing. I've manually entering the DNS numbers but still no luck.
My first thought was the router was dead, but all lights seems as they should and after reading comments on here and other forums, i'm now guessing it could be problem with Orange and 3rd party hardware.
As long as the netgear connects to the broadband ok then the only difference it should make to the xbox is with it's internal settings such as port forwarding etc. Have you testing the ethernet port it's using (and cable) with a PC to check it is actually working? And/or tried connecting it to another port?
I can confirm that both cable and router are working as should.
There is no way for me to connect the router to my PC as I'm having trouble getting my LAN card working. I was hoping that any tweaks could be down via the xbox live settings.
I'm pretty new to all this networking malarkey so it all pretty confusing.
