Hi all, my mate Tom has recently got his hands on one of those free laptops from PC World when you sign up to Orange Broadband. He signed up to the broadband service at the end of July and received his laptop shortly after.
However, his broadband still has not been activated (even when I am writing this post). His Speedtouch modem only displays a solid green USB light and a constantly flashing green ADSL light.
I am much more computer-savvy than he is, so I decided to give Orange a ring on their dreadful 0870 customer services line. All I got from the woman on the other line was a patronising quote telling me to phone their 0905 number. I told her that I truly disagree with paying 50 pence a minute to sort out a problem that is not my own! I told the woman it's their fault, they should not have to make us pay to get support. I threatened to cancel the contract but she hung up.
I do not want to even think about dialling their 0905 number because I feel Orange should not profit from these support numbers when in most cases it is entirely their fault. Also I don't particularly want some Indian speaking machine patronising me by telling me how to connect a USB modem properly.
I have a very good amount of experience in IT and sell computers and develop Linux software for a living. I have BT Broadband at my own home and am extremely satisfied with it. I'm doing this for my mate as he is getting really peed off with Orange at the moment.
Any ideas on what I should do?
P.S. I agree, there is no such thing as a free lunch!
Sorry to hear about the problems you and your friend have been having. All I can suggest is have you tried emailing them? When I last had a problem/complaint, I contacted them through thier email/contact form on the Orange site and said that I refused to use thier helplines as they are terrible, and if they forced me too, I would be leaving. They dealt with my problem by email. But then I am out of contract which might have made a difference. Still, might be worth a try? Good luck either way mate, hope it turns out ok.
What can i say, I had the same problem as you. I sent emails, and never got a response. I rang tech support, and they are no use what so ever. So instead I rang complaints. You are guranteed to speak to someone english, and the line is 50p a min, but if you ask them to ring you back they do.

I contacted Orange customer support and asked to be put through to complaints ask imediantly, and don't answer any questions, like "can I assist you with this problem"
From there complaints will give you a direct number to them, but I never had to use it, because they always rang me Unfortunately I don't have the number any more
