I have been looking at a pc running win 98se connected to the internet via a usb modem and a broadband connection (Orange) The problem is that it happily connects to the net and will open some pages but not all, if you open google it will search on any subject in fractions of a second but if you go to open sites it is very hit and miss whether they open. If you type an address into the address bar it won't open the site.
I put a payg dial up connection on the pc and any site will open without a problem as it should do.
I have deleted the broadband software and reloaded it without any improvement. The fact it all works OK with a dial up connection suggests that there is not much at fault with IE6 or that there may be virus or spyware problem, I ran a AVG scan and found nothing.
The only problems I could find with the machine are that the hard drive is over 90% full, it is only a 810MB after all. I deleted all cookies and temporary files.
I have now installed a new hard drive and reloaded Win 98SE and other software, at home it will happily connect to any website through my internet connection (ethernet cable and router) but when I return it ti the owner and install the Orange software I am back where I startedm some sites will open some won't.
Has anyone any idea what is going on here?

UNABLE TO ACCESS WEB PAGES - SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS
The cause of this is incorrect network adapter Maximum Transmission Unit or MTU setting. You need to change the MTU setting on the computer using DRTCP.
If you can not access the site you will have to obtain the programme from a friend or at work. Once you have the programme double click on it to run.
First make a note of the current settings.
Fill in the programme settings as per the web pages above - SAVE - EXIT AND REBOOT COMPUTER.
If you can not access the pages to see settings then they are as follows:
TCP Receive Window = First try 55600 with 1430 below. Then try 51048 with 1458. (RWIN)
Window Scaling = Yes
Time Stamping = No
Selective Acks = Yes
Dial Up (RAS) MTU = First try 1430 if no luck try 1458
Path MTU discovery = Yes
Black hole detection = default
MAx duplicate Acks = 2
TTL = 64
If you are using a USB modem put the MTU value in Dial Up (RAS) MTU
If you are using a network card to connect to router put the MTU value as follows. Select your Ethernet Card (NIC) under Adapter Settings and enter there.
If you are using a wireless connection select your wireless adapter under Adapter Settings and enter there.
Make sure that your router does NOT have a lower MTU than the PC.
Once you can access webpages go to pages above to calculate your best RWIN depending on the speed of your connection. You can also optimise the settings at: http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
OK I will try all of the above but I would normally assume that this should not be necessary on a new installation. I can't imagine newbies going through all of this to get there internet working ok.
It suggests to me that there is a problem either with the speedtouch modem or the Orange software.

Past experience tells me that open DNS will not solve this problem, but nhyder is right it is the easiest.
The instructions are the simple version. I'll almost guarantee that if you change the MTU it will work, but you are right ADSL has got too complicated for most.
We've seen the prob before with Win98 it can be working one day and gone the next. If you are not comfortable with it get a friend to do it.

Yes, but it's Orange generally, you probably wouldn't find these problems with another ISP.
Whether it's a new connection or an established connection, we've all been there.
I've had Orange broadband since December 2004 and I've had to change to OpenDNS servers, change MTU and RWIN settings during this year to stabilise the connection and to increase connection speed from <2000 to >5500

Ok I finally got round to running DRTCP and changing the settings as suggested above, initially it didn't seem to make a difference but after a system restart it seemed to do the trick. mearly all sites now available.
The thing you have to make sure with DrTCP is you change the settings for the right adapter. It always defaults to the one I don't want to change for me
