I don't have an email address with Orange, but am intrigued by the problems that have been appearing. I had a look at the terms and conditions (for anyone that has webmail accounts i.e. @fsnet).
Quote:
9. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and keep indemnified Orange (and its parent, subsidiaries, affiliates, officers and employees) from and against any costs, damages, liabilities and losses (including legal fees) suffered or incurred by Orange as a result of any claim made by any third party due to or arising out of your use of the Service, your connection to the Service or any breach by you of any of your obligations under these Terms and Conditions.
10. Termination
10.1 You agree that Orange may immediately terminate this Agreement and your use of the Service at any time and for any reason, including but not limited to; a) if Orange believes that you have or are likely to breach any of these Terms and Conditions; b) if Orange is unable to continue to supply the Service due to contractual, economical or operational reasons. In the event of termination in respect of 10.1.b), Orange will give you as much notice of termination as is reasonably practicable.
Now obviously, if you have signed up to webmail, you have agreed to "indemnify" Orange. Looking at the Terms and, especially Termination, it says that Orange may terminate for contractual, economical or operational reasons. I believe that the cancellation of accounts will fall under economical, etc. They do go on to state that they would give you notce of deletions, etc.
Has anyone received any such notifications or any recent emails from Orange stating a change to terms and conditions?

10.4 You acknowledge and agree that any termination of the Service under any provision of this Agreement may be effected without prior notice, and agree that Orange may immediately thereafter delete any email files stored by it for you.
Damn...sounds like they have people over proverbial barrels on this one. If this is a recent update to terms and conditions, and they are obliged to send updates to T's and C's, you are accepting the new terms just by continuing to use the service. It would be interesting to see how Data Protection Act does against these T's and C's.
Webmail accounts are specifically ones that end @fsmail.net, they can only be accessed through the website.
The ones everyone is having trouble with at the moment are dialup pay as you go accounts. These accounts are dialup and can be accessed through the website and POP server access. All paid for accounts, anytime or broadband, when cancelled are reverted to pay as you go and continue working until they suspend and are eventually deleted.
Pay as you go T&C's wrote:
6.2 We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your use of the Services without notice if you do not connect to the Internet using the Member Services at least once in each period of 90 days.
...
8.3 We may terminate this Agreement or any part of it, at any time for any reason on one month notice to you, unless we terminate pursuant to Clause 6 without notice.
According to the contract Orange have done technically nothing wrong in deleting the accounts.
