I have been a very happy customer of wanadoo for around 3 years now with broadband and I have never ever ever had ANY connection problems on my 2mb line.
Around a week ago, for some reason, my connection speed was upped without telling me (its now downloading at 320kb/sec, i used to get 120kb/sec). Now how i'm very happy they did this (i guess for free), im experiencing some VERY annoying problems. It seems to be every single evening, and i cannot pin-point what time, the connection is dropping. It can happen 2 times between 7pm and 2am or up to 10 times.
This is a serious problem for me as I play alot of competitive online games which requires the constant connection all the time.
I currently have an old PC with the very old green speedtouch modem running the internet and I use Internet Connection Sharing to share the connection to my entire network through a switch. I've had this setup on my 2mb line for years and it's never been a problem. The internet is plugged into the main BT socket.
You will have been switched over to an unbundled network to upgrade your line speed (LLU). Log into your account on the member centre and find out which package you are on and what line speed. Then go to http://www.adslguide.org and do a speed test just to see what speed your connection is now running at.
If your speed has been upgraded and you have been moved onto LLU which sounds likely, download a high speed speedtouch 330 optimiser driver http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/do..._MODE.zip. This should help your modem maintain a stable connection at a higher speed.
My experience is almost exactly the same as Fenda's.
I was totally satisfied with Freeserve and then Wanadoo broadband. Very occasionally - ie, months apart - there was a connection problem. Every time, support was extremely helpful and rectified the problem by contacting BT.
About a week ago, however, my speed was increased - and the line started going down. Sometimes it stays up for longish periods - say, half an hour or an hour. But it always goes down eventually. Sometimes it goes down after only a few seconds.
I've been on to support Three times and we seem to have done everything: reinstalling software (including latest Speedtouch driver), unticking some of the boxes in Network Connections properties and plugging the filter straight into the BT socket (previously there was an extension lead between them). Result: none.
I have several times asked them to check the BT line, as on previous occasions. But they seem to be evading this by asking me to do yet another tweak at my end. I'm thinking of calling them again to demand point-blank that they do a check. But I think I'll just switch my account.
I'm thinking of going to PlusNet. Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about them?
In the meantime, thanks to those operating and contributing to this site.
Geoff

The only thing is: I wonder whether it reflects the latest customer thinking about Orange. Until a week ago, I would have given Orange/Wanadoo a rave review.
Interestingly enough, BT seems to have the highest number of satisfied customers compared with most of the other ISPs. A few years ago I wouldn't have touched BT with a barge-pole. I'm beginning to rethink that opinion.

Bah.. ive installed the new drivers and it doesnt seem to be disconnecting anymore but im getting a lag spike every 10 seconds (sometimes less frequent, sometimes more) for a second. Like a loss packet in counter-strike for example.. but the net stays connected. Any ideas? this is driving me insane

The old green 'Speedtouch USB' model doesn't support USB Isochronous Mode and tops out at around 4Mbps. The 'High Speed Driver' is really for the later 'Speedtouch 330' models. (The clues are all in the url posted above:
Thanx =) Orange are sending me a livebox so hopefully all will be well soon. How can I find out my sync speed or can I not on my old modem?
Also, quick question, 5 days ago Orange upgraded my connection for free. Did they upgrade me to the new LLU or to an adslMAX connection? I know the later requires 10 days to re-train the line and causes connection drops etc. but if its to LLU does this still require time to test and get a stable line again?

Almost certainly LLU. I don't think Orange are using Max ADSL yet. What does the availability checker here say about your line?
I don't think Orange LLU has the 10-day training period although clearly the Dynamic Line Management (DLM) kit has to respond to changing noise levels on the line. How Orange LLU DLM works (or doesn't work, as the case may be ) seems to be a secret, which is a pity since a little more glasnost would be good for their reputation.
I've visited them - and they've persuaded me that replacing my old green stingray with a Speedtouch 330 might - just might - improve the connection. So I've ordered one.
