I am having a problem with my Netgear DG834N router/modem. Intermittently on bootup the router connects for a few seconds before dropping the connection, I think I have identified when this happens due to a fluctuating Noise Margin, if the noise margin goes beyond 15db this is when the problem occurs below 15db no problem. I thought a higher Noise Margin was preferrable anyone enlighten me?
Well higher the better for determining the speed that can go on the line. However if it goes up beyond 15 that means it's trying to sync at a far reduced rate, lower the sync the higher the margin should become. If you're on ADSL Max or LLU then this shouldn't really be happening as LLU target's 6db or whatever sync cap is in place for the connection where as Max target's 6 initially and then knocks the value upwards in steps of 3db to improve stability, when it gets moved up like this on Max the system doesn't normally re-examine this for 14 days of stable connection.
My first thoughts would be to try and check the router on another line or someone else's on yours. That way you know if it's the line or the router.
