After spending the 8 weeks following my house move cursing utility companies, I finally got my Broadband connection last night! But I can't send email.
Now I've been browsing through all the sending email problems hoping to find a solution and I'm not sure that I have. I have been connected via my Orange mobile for the last 2 weeks, mostly with success, no specific problems with email sending.
I use MAC with Entourage (a quick call to a disineterested and repetitive Orange 50p per minute help desk bod who kept repeating her name very slowly put me off that tack) and I use my own domain - I don't intend to start using Orange email.
I can receive mail no problem and I have now come across the issue that Orange broadband forces me down the route of using smtp.orangehome.co.uk. Now I'm not sure if I have a setting out (I've tried quite a few) or if it's one of these seemingly extensive Orange smtp server problems.
Does anyone have any pointers? I ran out of time last night, so I shall fire up the old Windows laptop and see if Outlook works on that, but with all the posts on here I can't really see that helping...
I tried MAC Mail before powering up the laptop, and just did a test on one of my email accounts. I changed smtp to Orange instead of orangehome, but I removed the SMTP Server requires authentication' tick - I reckon that's the main bit. It works and I can't be bothered to change it back to orangehome to see if that works too.
I've no idea why Orange help's first reponse was "we don't support Entourage" when, as I pointed out, all I needed was a few generic basic settings. I've been with them for about 3 weeks now as so far I've had a really good service on the various support desks (duff battery, phone blacklisted for no reason, problems using phone as a modem, modem intermittent...) loads of problems but excellent and friendly customer support. I wonder if all the crap people get put to the chargeable number. I wouldn't call it again, I'd do the usual thing of going onto forums.
I'm not sure if this is a similar problem but due to the port 25 being filtered I am unable to use another smtp server that I used to use before returning to Orange and so I set up a Googlemail account as one can use SSL with port 587.
The other day I accidentally used my googlemail identity but used the Orange smtp server & found I got an error message & the e-mail did not go through. This does not happen when I use an identity at a domain owned by a friend where I have an e-mail address, but only when I use a googlemail identity.
I'm happy about being able to send through Orange smtp with my address at the friend's domain because Netweaver (at present) don't have an alternative smtp port.
It isn't a problem as I just remember to use the googlemail server with googlemail accounts but I just thought that Orange may also be filtering e-mail sent to smtp.orangehome.co.uk based on the sent-from address.
