I have a really strange problem - i have been looking around here for answers but they don't seem to work.
Basicly, im using a NETGEAR wireless router, and have been for a while with no problems, however recently web pages have started to show the 'page cannot be displayed' message.
This usually sorts itself out after an hour, but this time - its been a day :/
I can connect to the internet just fine, my computer says it has a connection as do my games consoles.
However everything seems to point to DNS, my consoles say there is an error with the DNS, as does MSN troubleshoot. So i don't know what it going on..
I got in contact with Orange and after being switched from one person to another i finally got given a ream of numbers and other information to put in... most of which was already inputted...
The DNS's they gave me.. didn't work.
Im confused as to what this problem was, it happened before when i first got a router.. i assumed the router i purchased was broken because when i got a new one it was fine *that time i could view a few select sites like google and bbc.co.uk* but i find it strange how im having a VERY similar problem again.
Luckily i will be changing providers soon, my mum thinks its stupid how we are paying so much for a deal that is greatly outdated by other competators at a cheaper rate.. Orange even offers better deals now than what we are on.. yet they make no attept to tell us they do so..
The cause of this is incorrect network adapter Maximum Transmission Unit or MTU setting. You need to change the MTU setting on the computer using DRTCP.
If you can not access the site you will have to obtain the programme from a friend or at work. Once you have the programme double click on it to run.
First make a note of the current settings.
Fill in the programme settings as per the web pages above - SAVE - EXIT AND REBOOT COMPUTER.
If you can not access the pages to see settings then they are as follows:
TCP Receive Window = First try 55600 with 1430 below. Then try 51048 with 1458. (RWIN)
Window Scaling = Yes
Time Stamping = No
Selective Acks = Yes
Dial Up (RAS) MTU = First try 1430 if no luck try 1458
Path MTU discovery = Yes
Black hole detection = default
MAx duplicate Acks = 2
TTL = 64
If you are using a USB modem put the MTU value in Dial Up (RAS) MTU
If you are using a network card to connect to router put the MTU value as follows. Select your Ethernet Card (NIC) under Adapter Settings and enter there.
If you are using a wireless connection select your wireless adapter under Adapter Settings and enter there.
Make sure that your router does NOT have a lower MTU than the PC.
Once you can access webpages go to pages above to calculate your best RWIN depending on the speed of your connection. You can also optimise the settings at: http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
About 4 weeks ago both my desktop and laptop started with this issue. Rang the now infamous Orange tech support who knew less about PCs than I and I'm no expert - simply an internet surfer. After many phone calls the detail of which I wont bore you with I returned back to work after the Xmas break yesterday, did a bit of googling, found this website and threads, went home and lo and behold a bit of pinging and MTU changes later on my wireless router and Vista settings (as noted elsewhere) everything works once more! Many thanks to all and this site is now logged as one of my favourites!
Cheers to the real technical support guys & girls here.
