After a lot of letters to Orange re my download speed I have now had a BT engineer here to check my line ...he said my ip profile is set at 1meg this is because I an to far from the exchange(he also gave me a lot of blurb about old aluminum cabling 0. Although all checks do state that it is capable of up to 2 Meg.
Do I accept this ?? as the connection is quite stable and I an achieving about 950kbs at most times of the day.
I would be interested in any comment

All providers state up to a speed rather then the actual speed you'll get as it does vary, even those with 8M lines can sometimes only get 6MB, as it is always dependant on your line and how far away you are from the exchange box.
With ours it has excess cable spiralled as well as being far away from the box. We've only recently had an upgrade to 2MB in our area and I did a systems check and were getting, 2.2 on average (if you have Netgear you can check it there)
BT are rolling out 8MB across the country. Its a case of waiting for it to get to you.
Its also worth remembering that you are sharing your line with other customers, depending on their ratio 1:15-1:20. So the speed you get will always vary even from one provider to another on the same speed.
BT have told you the right answer your line may be capable of up to 2mb but you are likely set a lot lower to be more stable.BT rolled out up to 8 mb a long time ago and you may not ever get that due to the distance you are from the exchange.I am on up to 8mb 1.4 km from the exchange and get 6mb download and thats good enough for me.Try this tool that kitz provided you will need your line stats though.
