Is it only me? Most evenings I am unable to access the internet using my dial up modem on Wanadoo. Sunday 4th June for example - 2 hours no success.

Shouldn't be much in it. AOL may be using a 'compressing' web proxy similar to Onspeed (but less well-featured) which means web pages (but not downloads) are quicker at the expense of some stale pages and lower quality graphics. Maybe someone with experience of AOL dial-up could comment.
Constant line is busy message. Ok during the day. It is very rare to get on at first attempt in the evening & twice now impossible to get on for hours. I know the comment should be to get broadband but I feel as if I am being forced into something I don' t need at home because of lack of access.

e=engaged constantly, x=continuous tone/invalid number

The above may not help, but may provide alternate numbers which may work for you in your area

Orange are phasing out the BT-provided Anytime numbers:
0808 993 3xxx
(maybe already gone) leaving just the 3 types of Energis-provided Anytime numbers:
0808 991 6xxx - I think there are a very, very small number of exchanges (Shetland Islands) where these don't work.
0808 997 7xxx - Only work from a small number of exchanges.
161642 0845 xxx xxxx - I think work from all exchanges.
My experience is that you get a better connection on 0808 991 6xxx than you do on 161642 0845 xxx xxxx. Also, if a fault develops dialling the former from your exchange, then there is also usually a fault with the latter.
