Hi, I'm posting this on behalf of my boyfriend and his family, since they have no access to the internet yet thanks to Orange.
His mum took out a phone contract with Orange for £35 a month, which came with free 2mb broadband, but she agreed to pay an extra £5 a month to get 8mb broadband. From what I understand everything is installed correctly but the internet has never worked. For the last 3 weeks she's been phoning up and each time just gets told 'wait 24/72 hours'. The last time she called they said wait another month until it starts working! So she decided to cancel but was told this would cost £55. I've told her to write to Ofcom, does anyone else have any other suggestions?
cancel and refuse to pay anything they have never provided you with a service .Also ask for any money you have paid back. Then go to a proper Isp do not fall into their trap offering you free stuff .Trust me escape while you have the chance.

She should ask them for a MAC code to go to another provider they cannot refuse her one and by law has to be provided within 5 days even if you are still in a contract then you can dispute what they say you owe remind them that a contract works both ways and that they have clearly broke their side of it and report them to Ofcom and ISPA.
Good luck

Sadly, I guess it isn't as clear cut as it could be - as the broadband service is free, then it is perhaps the £55 is for cancelling the phone contract, or at least switching it to one that doesn't include broadband (you'd probably still be tied into the phone contract anyway)
Orange are bad enough at providing a service that people pay for, I'm not surprised a free version never worked.
No such thing as a free lunch..or broadband it seems
You may be able to claim 'false advertising' as you would not have considered, this deal if the broadband option was not useable.
I'm sure there's plenty of small print to protect Orange in this case, whether it's fair to the customer or not.
Either way, best of luck!
