I am about to update my current wired home network to include a WiFi option, a NAS & a networked printer. This is all driven by the move over to Orange & their LiveBox.
I am planning to connect all desk PCs (x 3) & the NAS via a LAN Switch which in turn will connect to the Live Box. I also want to have to Laptops that will connect wirelessly to the Live Box.
All the PC's will need to have WWW access & at least two of the PC's will need to has NAS access.
My questions are as follows:
1. Has anyone set up a similar configuration & hence can advise of any pitfalls?
2. Are there any specific issues with the IP addressing of all the various network elements? Should I leave it for automatic IP addressing or set up for static IP addresses & if so within what ranges?
3. What are the typical WiFI ranges of the LiveBox. One of the laptops will be on the 2nd storey whilst the LiveBox will be on the ground.
If you use a standard switch to connect all those up then with automatic addressing it should just work.
If you're going to share files and access the different systems a lot through the network then it may be better to set them up on static IP's. I'd say get them connecting to the internet on automatic before moving to static IP's so you know they all work first.
Static IP's generally will make things easier to use and access overall. Default IP range on the livebox is 192.168.1.x DHCP uses 9-200 so best to use outside that. Probably best, unless you start adding more devices to use 2-8 for static IP's and if you need more use 201-250.
Wifi range varys hugely. It mainly comes down to 3 main points, the device itself, whats between the two devices and general signals in your area. Unless you have some more specialist equipment and knowledge the only way to tell is to try it and see. Just remember if the range isn't as good as what you want you can try changing the chanel in the livebox in order to try and improve it.
