I have a Dell Dimension 5000 running Windows XP, 1Gb RAM, 160 Gb Hard Disk.
The above desktop, my wife's laptop and my palm tx (pda) connect via the Livebox to the internet - no problems until last friday (27th July). For some reason that I cannot fathom, my desktop would not connect to the internet - IE7 kept showing 'page not downloaded' or something similar for every webpage that usually downloads no rpoblem. Yet my palm tx and my wife's laptop connected fine. I cannot remember installing any major piece of software, fiddling with settings or getting infected with a virus (I keep my desktop updated regularly with new virus definitions from avg free, and regularly scan for spyware using adaware and spybot). So I was puzzled as to what caused the problem. I use a linksys wusb54g usb network adapter to connect to the livebox.
I did fix the problem by reinstalling windows xp (service pack 2) then installing the linksys adapter which found the livebox and connected once I'd fed in the security numbers - this was without using the Orange cd!
It works fine now - but can anyone help me to find out what happened in the first place and offer a solution just in case it happens again. I have a nagging suspicion that I needn't have spent a whole day on it!! Many thanks.

UNABLE TO ACCESS WEB PAGES
FIRST just check that Norton Security or a similar product is not the cause of the problem.
USB Speedtouch 330 Modem syncs up OK and both lights are solid green, you can log on OK but cannot access many websites and in some cases (eg hotmail) they cannot send/receive emails from a local client using pop3 and smtp.
Sounds like it may have just lost the connection and needed to be told to reconnect. Did the status show as connected, though it's hard to work out the problem after the fact.
You could have gone into the wireless networks list, click the change order or preferred networks remove the livebox from the list and then just try and connect again fresh.
The Livebox didn't lose connection because my wife's laptop and my pda could connect. It's like the Livebox was not at fault - seems to be my PC or the network adapter. (Sorry if this is therefore the wrong place to post this thread)
I used my Linksys network usb adapter's own software to connect (not the windows one) - and I could connect to the Livebox but no internet service.
Ok that helps out a little more. If it does happen again there's a couple of things you can check.
Try opening 192.168.1.1 in internet explorer and you should get the livebox pages.
If that works confirm it by trying 64.233.183.147, you should get google.
If both worked ok then you just need to manually set the DNS servers and it should then work.
Open network connections and go into the properties of the wireless,
Go into the properties of the Internet Protocol listing,
Select the Use following DNS servers and enter:
195.92.195.94
195.92.195.95
