As a back up to Orange's idiosyncratic off/on connections, I set up a dial up to Waitrose with the intent of moving to their Broadband if it worked OK. I called Waitrose up for a technical question, just one menu level on their phone system, then a real live intelligent person answered the phone, not some multi layer menu system ending up with a recorded message telling me to phone back some other time when they were less busy. I asked my question and the guy gave me the answer immediately, so the conversation took about 20 seconds. No reinstalling the modem, taking the computer to bits, giving security information and wasting money on a premium rate line and then not sorting out the problem. In fact talking about premium rate lines the Waitrose calls are FREE. I had forgotten what Customer Service was. Unlike dealing with Orange, I am not tearing my hair out, becoming suicidal and reaching for the whisky bottle, I feel happy, relaxed and at peace with life I also have a system that works!!!.
Yes it is easy to forget that Orange are so extreme in their incompetence.
That's part of the reason they were voted worst ISP by Watchdog in March 2007.
There are so many excellent broadband companies out there who do actually care about you and can provide a fast, reliable service.

Orange are a disgrace.

That's the real tragedy. There are some brilliant and honest new broadband providers out there who are desperate to get just the smallest slice of the big providers action. These guys typically provide unbeatable service with both respect to their broadband service and to their customer support. Unfortunately they do not have the advertising budget that is available to providers like Orange who seem to have a business plan that provides for 100% customer turnover every 12 months and relies on high profile advertising and gimmicks in order to replace them.

The thing is Waitrose isn't new nor are a lot of the smaller providers its just that people new to broadband think the only providers that can afford to advertise free and now free laptops on tv is their only choice the large providers thrive on this, its only till the customer has a problem and has to rely on their so called support that they realise they have made a costly mistake and until Ofcom get their act together this will carry on.

I think the reason people choose Orange above ISPs such as Waitrose is that the comparisons are based on price and performance is rarely taken into account, ISPs like Waitrose are often not included in these comparisons and they are often slightly ore expensive. Orange phoned me the other day, not on the line that I use with them, and tried to sell me one of their fantastic systems, everything seemed to be free. I suppose if I did not know I may have fallen for it, instead I was in danger of bursting a blood vessel.
