Hi folks
I'm trying to help a friend sort her emails out but I can't ping pop.orangehome.co.uk or smtp.orangehome.co.uk
Any ideas?

The email servers are not set to reply to pings so that's a normal result.

Is your friend getting any error message?
Problem sending? Receiving? Both?
What email client?

actually I used Karen's Net Monitor http://www.karenware.com/power...netmon.asp which has a special setting for mail servers . . . . .
but good news is today she reports problem fixed
how would you test if servers operational in future?

Try sending an email to your own email address. No errors on sending means the SMTP server should be fine, if it comes back ok with no problems then the POP server is working.
There are multiple servers for each though.

true, but a tracert (trace route) command such as - tracert pop.somedomain.com should give useful data.

A small amount, for me it simply stops returning information at hop 10, so I presume the servers don't respond to tracert's either. If you do think you have a problem along the route this may make it harder to know for sure one way or the other.
