actually I used Karen's Net Monitor http://www.karenware.com/power...netmon.asp which has a special setting for mail servers . . . . .
but good news is today she reports problem fixed
how would you test if servers operational in future?

Try sending an email to your own email address. No errors on sending means the SMTP server should be fine, if it comes back ok with no problems then the POP server is working.
There are multiple servers for each though.
A small amount, for me it simply stops returning information at hop 10, so I presume the servers don't respond to tracert's either. If you do think you have a problem along the route this may make it harder to know for sure one way or the other.
