I would like to ask some questions about WEP/WPA keys, as I am trying to configure the wifi in my Linux computer.
I switched the Livebox to WPA mode (WPA keys have typically 64 characters), but, still, on the Livebox configuration dialog, I have to enter a WEP key (with 26 characters). No field for a WPA key exists.
I can't understand that. If the Livebox is in WPA mode, why do I still have to enter a WEP key????? (I mean in the Livebox configuration, NOT in the computer configuration)
Therefore, I would like to ask some questions:
a) The Livebox, although in WPA mode, enforces me to enter a WEP key (no field for a WPA key exists). What is, then, the actual WPA key that I have to enter in the computer in order to connect to the Livebox?
b) The former is the key itself, NOT a key generator phrase, isn't it?
c) Is it ASCII, or hexadecimal?

The WEP key field is dual use, it works for WEP and WPA or either if only one mode is selected.

It's just poorly labelled field, it should be labelled security key.

Just enter the key shown in the WEP key field as it's dual use.

Correct, the WEP key shown is the actual key and not a pass phrase.

It's just they're not trained in it. Linux support can get complicated when you throw in different distros, adapters, control software etc.
I don't really know much about Linux myself so trying to help set it up if you don't know how to do it would be very confusing. They should be able to help with details of the wireless but it depends who you manage to get in touch with.
Only a question: I heard (I am not an expert) that WPA keys have typically 64 characters and, that, furthermore, some wifi software does not work with shorter keys.
So, should a 26 character WPA key (26 is the length of WEP keys) work correctly as well?
Depends on the software but AFAIK WPA keys can be shorter and they work fine with most adapters I've had experience with. I also remember seeing a report that mentioned the security of a 26 character key being not practical to crack unless it's something silly.
