On 12th June, my download speed suddenly jumped from "less than 2.7mb" to 6.7mb. Very good (if un-explained). Speed tests consistently showed this sort of speed (at least 6mb) until 2nd July. Since then, I achieve about 6mb first thing in the morning, but this drops progressively during the day - last night it was down to 227kb !!!! This morning it was 6.5mb, but has already dropped to 2mb. What's going on ???
Probably contention ratio's causing your speed to be inconsistent. It's a 'feature' of ADSL that none of the ISP's like to talk about.
Did I get the Orange Upgrade ? - Well, I've had 2 upgrades :
First (pre-announced) last summer when Orange sent me a "good news" email - end result - no ADSL, no phone line, nothing for 10 days !! When they eventually fixed it, my speed went up from 2mb to "slightly less than 2.7mb" (2.7 seems to be a magic number, I see it mentioned in a lot of posts).
Second (un-announced) a few weeks ago, when my download speed shot up from 2mb to almost 6mb. Trouble is, I don't get a consistent 6mb. I could live with it dropping a bit due to contention (drop down to 3 or 4 mb would be acceptable), but it often drops down to dial-up speed !!!
I'm loathe to contact Orange's so-called technical support - they're just kids in a call centre reading from a script.
Sorry for being verbose, but I've run support teams in IT for a number of years, and Orange's broadband offering is just pants - they should replace their IT director.
Couldn't agree more - I had PPP Server down for six weeks and endless worthless conversations with their off shore 'technical' support team.
On the day I rang to cancel they miraculously fixed it. I'm still gonna cancel but can't be arsed with the inconvienience yet as it is only just back up and running.
I can honestly say, as a 35 year old, I have never been so shabbily treated as a customer, as I have by Orange. The future don't look so bright as their strapline says.
