Recently I found it very difficult to send Email with Outlook 2007, the error message was not helpful. Incoming emails no problem. Bless them Orange Help by Email asked me to check the computer was connected.
However, on more checking I could send an Email out using telnet on port 25 with no authenticaion, except it took a long time for the first line to come up.
So it was a timeout problem.
You can increase the timeout time in the advanced settings tab box behind the "More Settining" button.
And after a restart of Outlook2007 it works, voila.
Hope this helps some else.
Of course the reply does no come back from the smtp.orangehome.co.uk but some freeserve server, so presumably the Orange network finds the one its thinks you need.

You can change the time out in Outlook Express by tools>accounts highlight your account click properties choose the advanced tab and there you can change the time out up to "long" which is 5 minutes then restart OE, if you have more than 1 email account in OE you will need to do it to each one seperately.
