Alright, this is a bit long winded but I'll do my best to explain.
Currently I have a laptop connected wirelessly to a Wanadoo livebox. It works perfectly with no problems. Recently I had my PC moved to this address and I attempted to connect it to the livebox with an ethernet cable. Previously I used a BT router though a USB port, so ethernet is new to me. Anyway, the PC and the livebox can see each other clearly and the laptop is able to network (Through the livebox) with the computer no problem. Unfortunately no matter what I do I can't get an internet connection on the PC.
I've tried numerous fixes (Including some mentioned on this board) and I can't get anything to work. I've installed the wanadoo drivers from the disc, tried using both livebox ethernet ports and messed around with IP's and DNS addresses until I was blue in the face, but nothing. Admittadly I'm not at all knowledgeable on this stuff, I'm practically flying blind. I cannot access google.com via IP.
At a guess I'd say it's a network card problem, but honestly I have no clue. Any help would be appreciated beyond what I've tried, because I can't find anything else.
Ok so you can access shared files with no problem but not the internet?
Just to make sure, if you go into status and then support for the network connection does the status say address type is Assigned by DHCP and the IP address starts 192.168.1.xxx?
You've tried turning off any firewall or security to make sure that's not been set previously and preventing the connection?

Currently the address type is manually configured, but does have an IP address that starts just like that (If it's made blank, I can't share files). I don't know how to make it DHCP configured, but I've heard that mentioned a few times.

The only active firewall on the PC is the Windows one and that's turned off. As for other security, I don't think I have anything like that. I always had an idea it was either a network card problem or my old settings interfering, but I don't have evidence to either.
As long as the address doesn't end .1, .254 or .255 then that should be working.
Think I may know the cause though.
Open internet explorer and put into the address bar:
216.239.39.99
If you get google then it's just the lack of DNS servers or incorrect ones thats the cause.
Get into the properties for the connection,
Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties,
You'll have the manual IP set there,
If you wanted a DHCP address you simply set that and the DNS option below it to auto,
However with a manual IP it requires manually set DNS servers so enter the following:
195.92.195.94
195.92.195.95
Once entered give it a minute and hopefully everything will then start working.
I didn't get Google using those numbers, in either IE or Firefox. Both claim they can't connect.
Putting the IP and DNS options onto Auto doesn't change it and on manual my DNS servers are already those numbers you posted. Still no connection at all.

TO TEST NETWORK CONNECTION:
Are you sure that you have a network card in the computer - I know it sounds daft - but they look very similar to modems.
(Start - All Programs - Accessories)
Open Command Prompt
Ping 192.168.1.1 -t
Control C to stop
For info purposes this command does a continuous loopback ping to the router. Without the -t it only does it 4 times. Its a means of quickly checking connectivity between PC and router.
If no connection will say:
Destination host unreachable.
Check into Network Connections through the control panel. Double click your local area connection. What status does it show? If connected go into the support tab, what does it show in there?
You could also right click the connection and repair it.
There could be a problem with network cable - try another one. Also if you are in the red socket on the Livebox try the yellow one.
There could be a problem with network card or drivers - first try re-installing drivers - re-boot computer.
If still no luck I would physically take network card out of computer - re-boot computer, then turn off. Re-install network card and allow XP to to find and install it.
The pinging came back 28 times before I stopped it, it definitely gets through. The status on the local area connection says 'Connected' and the support tab shows the connection as manually configured and then the following details:
IP Address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Attempting to repair the connection does nothing about internet connectivity, it's still not working. I've used 2 seperate cables and tried both coloured ports with each to no effect. I realy am stumped.
Thanks for the ideas Keith, sorry they didn't help. I could try and refit the network card and see if that works, but I'd only rather open the PC as a last resort. If there's a suitable chance it will work, I'll go ahead and try it.
That doesn't change anything either. I'm starting to get the feeling this is more of a hardware problem, I can't see messing with the settings is going to do very much at this point.
I'm not giving up but I suppose I'll have to get an expert to come round and try to figure it out. It might be easier to solve in person. Anyway, thanks for the replies Elhana and keith, you do a good job here.
Open Internet Options and go to the connections tab,
Click LAN Settings,
Of the 3 main tickboxes you only want the first one ticked if use a proxy server is ticked then that's likely the cause,
Ok twice, close internet explorer if it's open and then see if that helps at all.
That said in the connections tab I don't have any internet connections set up. I know that kinda sounds odd, but I was told by many sources that I wouldn't need to, essentially it was 'plug the cable in and go'. I assume that's correct?
