When transferring files between 2 devices on my wireless network it takes forever. For example a 300Mb file took nearly 4 minutes via the live box. Is this correct? Is it not 54Mbps transfer speed?

That works out roughly to about a 10Mbps connection. It's a little low but within the normal range for wireless.
Understand you never get 54Mbps over a wireless connection thats just the theoretical maximum speed. The biggest thing to affect the speed is the encryption that along with overheads usually takes upto 20Mbps of the speed. Thats for WPA security, the higher the security used the more bandwidth it takes. After that any signal problems for either wireless adapter mean things are reduced further. Then if either adapter is on a USB connection that can potentially slow or limit speeds even further.
